Are signatures "out"?

I’ve been spending less time at SDMB and recently started posting more again. I just noticed today that most people don’t seem to be adding signatures to their posts anymore. It used to be the “in” thing to do. Am I stuck in yesterday?

I assume that it has something to do with bandwidth? Is this a correct assumption? If so, has it made a big difference?

No, I think that people are like me, ie. Lazy. We don’t post our signature out of pure, unadulterated laziness.

I think we just all got out of the habit, because we were told that sigs just contributed to the hamster’s workload.

Also, having the same witticism / piece of wisdom repeated several dozen times quickly gets tiresome for the person reading it.

What Arnold Winkelried said. And laziness.

Since I found out that you can view posts without having to view signatures, I stopped using mine. Anything to help our furry little friends.

Yes. Faced with the prospect of using my sig ad nauseum versus having to locate a new witticism periodically, I soon gave up using mine.

I quit using mine 'cuz Arnold didn’t like it.

I use mine only in threads that I know (from my John Edwardsian powers) that the mods won’t regulate. Therefore they will not see how it breaks the four line rule (is it a rule?) by a line.

So, you know if a letter M is going to enter the thread? How do you know if the M stands for moderator, mother, or Meatros?

I rarely forget to enable/disable my sig, so I’m glad that the default on this board is no sig.

Sigs are, like, soooooooo 2001. We have “location fields” now!

Ever since Fenris posted his Sig-Free SDMB post, I’ve had mine turned off, and I bet others have as well.

Sigs seem a lot less important when half the people on the board may never see them. I don’t miss them at all.

Meatros, if your powers are John Edwardsian, wouldn’t that mean the moderators were dead?

I never particularly cared for sigs anyway. I had one I used sparingly that didn’t mean much, and I haven’t used it since the swap to vB. This is partly due to the way vB uploads the sig every time the thread opens, rather than storing the sig as posted as text. This means if you update your sig, all previous posts are changed, too. I liked to use the sig to refer to the text of my message, and this feature makes that not work for me. Besides, I find sigs distracting from the flow of the conversation, and tediously repetitive. Now that I can read without sigs, I’m so much happier.

Wasn’t there a suggestion made some time ago not to use your sig more than once per page? I think a lot of people put default sig off and then forgot to turn it on when they wanted it enough to get frustrated and give up.

My sig pretty much says it all.

HA!

I’m a trendsetter!

Fenris

Yes, indeed you are! I’m sig-free as well.

Every once in a while I read a comment about how appropriate a sig is, or that I should “see someone’s sig” for extra explanation.

Pretty much not worth it for those few times.

I’m not sig-free, but I did see him in Vegas once. With Roy.

Ba-Da-Bump.
