Are the wheels coming off the Yankees?

Or is this just a way for fate to make the pain of The Curse that much more exquisite?

It occurred to me as I watched the game last night, with all those Sox fans going crazy, and praying, and wearing their Rally Caps, and crossing their fingers, and sacrificing virgins (not really, but they would if they could), that for Boston to go under in four or five is too mundane a script for such an epic history. It’s so much more refined and dramatic to take it right to the edge, before :smack: “hello, I’m The Curse; remember me?”

Yes, I think bringing it back to Yankee Stadium after the pandemonium and heroics in Boston; after raising the hopes of the faithful to a fever pitch, only to have those hopes dashed yet again, is the only way to elevate this to the level of Greek tragedy, where it truly belongs.

PS - Any guesses on who will be this year’s Bucky Dent?

Yeah, I figure the powers-that-be “suggested” to the Yanks that they drag it out a bit longer. Tons of money is made on each game broadcast, and it looks like the Cards-Strows series might go 7. I would imagine the Yanks will clobber the Bosox tonight, I don’t think they want to get into a game 7 with anyone.

I’m not saying the series is fixed, just conveniently orchestrated for maximum profit.

Last night I figured it would be Cairo but that didn’t work out. I predict tonight will be anticlimatic with the Yankees winning a quick game 4-1.

I sure hope so. Dragging my butt into work after only 4 or 5 hours of sleep is getting annoying.

I am starting to worry about Mariano, though.

That last was in response to Loach. I am NOT hoping that the “wheels have come off.” I AM hoping it’s a quick victory for New York so I can get some sleep!

I hope the Yankees go down in flames, but regardless of the outcome of the series the winner of the NLCS will win the World Series. The Yankees and Red Sox have no more pitching left. I think the longest rest in the whole series was three days so far. They just can’t keep this up and expect their pitchers to have anything left later.

AMEN to that!

I’m so tired you’d think I was out there playing.

Add that to the way the Astros and Cardinals are hitting - I don’t think we’ve seen a series with two teams hitting this well since the 1993 World Series, which included a game that ended 15-14.

We may well witness a home run slaughter of unprecedented proportions.

Unfortunately, that thought has crossed my mind many times.

Me, too.

Go Yankees!!

WRONG!!! :wally

Hell, as long as we’re going into game 7, I better dust off the “B” cap.

Watching that dropped ball dribble outside first base, I figured Arroyo was gonna give Dent a run for his immortal money, but then the replays showed who the real goat was there. Dodged a big ol’ historical bullet, did Bronson.

After these past three games, I’m thinking the only way the curse is going to stay alive is if the announcer starts going over the Yankees starters and says, “Playing right field, Number 3…”

Of course, this IS the Yankee’s we’re talking about here, so if anybody would try to interrupt the Bambino’s eternal rest, it would be Steinbrenner.

EZ

Hey, Steinbrenner could disinter Ruth, prop his corpse up at first base, and it would still hit .280 with 20 homers.

The curse is over. Two potential bad calls that the umpires all huddled together for and eventually got right. That doesn’t happen if the baseball gods are still angry at the BoSox. So, is anybody left to pitch tonight?

According to Yahoo MLB it will be Mr. Brown vs. Mr. Lowe.

And whaddya know, the Red Sox did it. Greatest comeback in baseball history.

Joe Torre will be fired, I would imagine.

Hell, they lost the transmission, muffler and both side-view mirrors.

Heh…you know that car the Blues Brothers have? And they’re jumping it over drawbridges and medians, and gunning through malls and roadblocks, and driving 120mph through the streets of Chicago? And when they finally pull up to Daley Plaza and get out, and it suddenly just collapses into a heap of junk and steam and the fender is rocking on the sidewalk as they look on?

It was like that.

Absolutely spot on perfect description. It would only be better with this Chicago reference if the Cubbies were involved.

The Yankees are in a heap of trouble for the future. I expect Cashman will be gone, even though a fair portion of the deals were orchestrated by Steinbrenner. Torre won’t be fired, but he will retire. With that I think you will see Stottlemeyer and a couple other coaches shown the door.

The Yankees have glaring deficiencies at 2nd, the bench, starting pitching, and relief pitching. I am thoroughly amazed at how little depth and pitching this particular $190 million has bought.

The Yankees, due to age and injury, probably have need to be addressed issues in center, first base, catcher, and Mariano.

The big trouble is that they have a very, very weak farm system due to past trades so that is almost out as a trading option. That means trades would likely have to include those same high priced contracts that George himself set. Good luck getting fair market value on those. He can surely overpay for free agents (Beltran et al) but he also has a lot of contracts and players to clear out and how that works out isn’t entirely clear.
