Are there any celebrities who are members?

Of course Ringo, is the former beatle.

Well I am not famous yet… but I will be…

does that count?

I am not too sure for what yet, but I will let you all know when it happens…

Well, I’m a celebrity too but an even more important celebrity than your usual common-or-garden celebrity worshiped by mobs of the great unwashed.

I’m so important that I am only celebrated and well-known by a very select group of people

For three years, I was a member of the only nationally syndicated student produced program in the USA. It was a sketch comedy called The Campus Loop. Lots of fun, but eventually the people paying and distributing us went bankrupt, got bought out by some other company, and then they immediately went bankrupt. But hey, people from University, Pennsilvania, to Compton, CA saw us for a good solid two years, so that makes me something of a celeb, I guess.

Well, I guarantee you my name has been in more magazines than JLo.

Of course, I’m in publishing and listed on every masthead…

  1. It depends on how you define “celebrity”. This varies greatly. If what you mean is “someone you might see on Entertainment Tonight” or some other vapid media, then there are a couple. If you mean “so well-recognized in their scientific field of expertise that anyone else in said field would know their name”, I know there are quite a few here.

  2. And, a lot of them want privacy, or are afraid of being harassed or threatened, and would never let on who they really are.

I’m going to claim celebrity (or noteriety, although I swear I am simply misunderstood). Several weeks ago, coming out of a theatre a child stared at me, pointed and loudly proclaimed - "it’s the devil"

Rob Zombie?
zat you?

I was on both Ricky Lake and Maury Povich.

For about a second.

I’m convinced that someone from Howard Stern’s staff at least reads this board. Very VERY often I’ll be listening to the Stern show and he’ll reference a site that I just went to from a link in MPSIMS the day before. Or he’ll start a topic of conversation that was just discussed recently in IMHO.

Oh, and I’m pretty famous.

OK, no I’m not.

more human than human

Maybe it is the dressing in black, the piercings, the spiky stuff I wear?

nah, couldn’t be

I don’t think scientists are known as celebrities in their own field. Rather, they’re known as “experts in their field.” Not the same thing.

I was on Reach For The Top once.

WORSHIP ME!

From: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=celebrity

My point is both valid and backed-up.

No it’s not. As has been mentioned on here many times, a dictionary is simply a reference for definitions, not usage.

The only celebrity scientists are those who are famed outside of their fields, i.e. to the general public, such as Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, and so forth.

Max Planck was not a celebrity. Max Planck was a renowned scientist. I believe there’s a giant difference.

But let’s ask the OP.

Well, the OP said:

“Anyone know of any famous people on this board (besides Cecil)?”

They seem to be equating “famous people” with “celebrities”. At least, when you read the OP and the title it sure looks that way. Sounds to me like they’re looking for a broad interpretation here.

(Besides which, the usage of a word has to be strongly related to the definition in some manner, or else the dictionary is of little value, and we might all just as well start applying words wherever we see fit, like the verbal equivalant of a rhesus monkey flinging feces about the room. And that has been “mentioned here many times” as well.)

Of course, if this whole discussion is actually about something else, then maybe it shouldn’t be done here.

I’m not sure what you’re getting at, but if no one other than the people in a specific scientific field know of a particular scientist’s work, then that scientist can hardly be classified as a “celebrity.”

If you have some other problem you want to discuss, I believe you know the proper forums for that.

I find that many of the ‘Gee, golly, look at this’ threads in MPSIMS and IMHO are links I’ve previously seen on fark.com

I think that a lot of media types read fark for their unusual news.

No, I’m Dave Gorman. [sub]Okay, not really.[/sub]

However, I have been on television several times in over two dozen countries from England to Australia, with my most recent screen appearance being two weeks ago. I’ve sung on three CDs thus far, with a fourth being released by Chandos this fall, and have performed to sell-out audiences in five countries. Am I famous? No. And yet all of the above is true (except the Dave Gorman thing, obviously). Go figure.
