Are there any free fax services left?

I am working with my dad on his business site and we thought that it would look more professional if he gave a fax number along with the address and phone number.

Well when I signed up with efax, it was free. I’m grandfathered in since that was what I agreed to…

…but if you sign up now, it’s $12.95/month.

I’ve looked at another site whichis $9.95/month…

Are there any out there that are still free?

I looked into this a few months ago and found the following lists of free services:

For receiving: http://www.savetz.com/fax/#freereceive
For sending: http://www.savetz.com/fax/#freeus

They still list eFax as free, so they may be out of date. FaxWave still appears to be free for receiving. I haven’t used any of these services, so I can’t give recommendations.

I’d imagine you’d have thought of this, but couldn’t you set up a fax program on a computer? Even an old Mac Classic with a 14K modem and ImageWriter could get the job done, probably for cheap. I know older (and maybe newer) Macs can easily fax from within any application that print if the fax/modem driver is installed.

I know it’s obvious, but how about absorbing the one time cost of the machine?

They gotta be dirt cheap these days.

He doesn’t want to tie up a phone line for it, that’s the thing. And he doesn’t want to put his number and his fax number on there and have them be the same–too dorky. Plus it would just be annoying to share your line with a fax machine.

eFax is still free, although you have to search through their pages for the registration page–they, like HotMail, want you to spend money. Here’s their free eFax Registration Page.

I signed up for efax recently and it is free but you have to install their program to view the faxes and I refuse to install it so I have abandoned it. I wish they would just send it to you as TIFF or whatever but nooooooo you have to install their software which is probably spyware or has advertising or whatever.

I have efax. It’s somewhat annoying. At one time, their fax attachments were TIFF files with a different extension, but I’m not sure whether they still are. The efax program starts in my System Tray area in Windows, which I just promptly kill whenever I boot up, with no apparent ill effects. When I want to run it, I just launch the file from my email client.

I would like a cheap or free outbound e-mail program, because I’m about to get rid of my connection to the phone company, and will have an IP phone from packet8.net. The only issue is that my wife needs to fax for her work a couple of times per week. The IntelliFax service at 7 cents per minute for outbound faxes, with no monthly fee, which I just found a the page bibliophage linked to, sounds ideal.

Does anyone know of a service that gives you a forwarding phone number? (preferably toll free, but that’s probably not gonna be affordable)

I really would like to be able to publish a phone number, but not one that could be reverse-lookup’d and traced to me! Stalkers, you know.
