I need to fax a couple of single page documents and figured it would be easy to do through my computer. But I found out my computer lacks a few basic items, a fax modem and a hard wired phone line. The fax software that came with my 4 in 1 printer/copier/scanner/fax does not support a VOIP phone connection. I tried Google and found plenty of online fax services but all require a monthly fee. The few that offer free trials only work one way, you can receive faxes but not send them. Does anyone know of a fax service that would allow me to send just a few pages without any kind of committment and preferrably take Paypal if there is a fee?
Print out document and fax it on your 4 in 1? Seems simpler than anything else.
ETA-Rereading your OP, I’m not sure what effect VOIP has on regular lines. I may have just given a stupid answer, if so, sorry.
I would like to get some free fax service, too. Also, can anyone recommend me some free fax software to download or provide a link to download the MS Windows XP fax software. My computer never came with the XP CD and I don’t want to pay MS $20 just so I can install fax software that should be free.
I’ve searched quite a few software download sites and it seems that all the phone line based fax software is either commercial or they require a subscription to their online service. I can’t even find an open source alternative that doesn’t require me to be running a fax server somewhere.
Why can’t fax machines just all die at once. Why the hell is this technology so pervasive when we have the Internet?
eFax and Fax2Mail both have free trial periods.
I’ve used both, and eFax is far superior for ease and convenience.
I’m surprised you had a hard time finding anything. Googling “free web to fax” brings up tons. That’s how I found these two.
May not have been quite so prevalent four and a half years ago…
I’ve not found Googling to be particularly useful when looking for free web-to-fax or e-mail-to-fax services. Not that Google doesn’t turn up scads of website claiming to offer such services—the problem is that when I actually try to use them, the fax never goes through. The website (or e-mail gateway) happily accepts the document, and maybe even spits out some message confirming that it was successfully received, but it never goes on to confirm that the fax was actually sent, and indeed the recipients claim never to have received anything.
I think the OP would do well here to accept only personal recommendations.
I personally recommend faxzero. It’s always done the job when I needed to send a fax.

How is it for receiving?
ETA: Hmmmm…upon inspection, it seems to be a send only kind of operation.
