Are these "Obama" location-puns unique to this site?

While the location field change appears to be unique to this site, what has become widespread on blogs and My Space, is adopting the middle name Hussein.

Apparently, some people were doing this as early as last Fall, but the big explosion of it happened in February, as I mentioned in this post, as a response to Bill Cunningham emphasizing it in Senator Obama’s name on 3 separate occasions in his introduction of John McCain.

Rather than fading away as the incident that triggered it became more distant, it’s actually spreading, so much so that the New York Times wrote a story about it published today.

So for those dopers who don’t like the location field change, just be glad this site doesn’t allow members to modify their names without going through an administrator, or you’d be seeing over 100 Doper Hussein Names.

I care because I thought I’d joined a message board full of otherwise intelligent, interesting people- not the Barack Obama Mouseketeer Fanclub.

This sort of comment is really starting to bug me. On this board, I’ve heard Obama supporters called “mindless zombies” and “drinking the kool-aid” and “blindly loyal” and things like that.

Equating enthusiasm with cultism is ridiculous and insulting.

It’s a cheap and easy way to dismiss the Obama supporters and their concerns too.

Many of the “intelligent, interesting” people on this board are enthusiastic about Obama for very good reasons. The public displays of Obamism might be tiresome or annoying to those of you who aren’t from the U.S. or who support McCain, but tough noogies.

This sort of comment is really starting to bug me. On this board, I’ve heard Obama supporters called “mindless zombies” and “drinking the kool-aid” and “blindly loyal” and things like that.

Equating enthusiasm with cultism is ridiculous and insulting.

I don’t believe I’ve made that comparison, but when huge numbers of board members spontaneously change their locations to some sort of pun on the name of a political candidiate I think we’re beyond enthusiasm and heading towards The Twilight Zone…

I have no interest in the US political campaign and really don’t give a shit whether you vote for Obama, Clinton, McCain, or Lrrr from the planet Omicron Persei 8, but the reality is you’ve got a whole sodding country (with its radio, tv, and newspapers) to prance about, flag-wave, and politick in, and it’s tiresome and annoying to have to deal with it here on the boards.

I bet you guys would be complaining if the Aussie posters here went out of our way to ensure every other thread in GD and IMHO was about Kevin Rudd or Morris Iemma or Anna Bligh or John Brumby… it might be interesting for a week or two, but after three months of it you’d be as sick of it as we are of the Obama/Clinton/McCain For El Presidente! stuff that’s currently deluging the boards.

There was nothing “spontaneous” about it. A thread was started, and people started participating, and it grew over time. There’s nothing even unusual about that, let alone “Twilight Zoneish”.

My Og, you’d think the location field jumped off the screen and bit you in the nose every time you had to scroll past it or something. Why on earth do you CARE what location people attribute to themselves?

You would lose that bet. GD is already filled with every other thread on topics I’m not the least bit interested in. You have something you think would be of interest for people here to debate? MSNBC had a feature on it today as well. I think they interviewed the guy who started it all–or at least a guy who has adopted the middle name Hussein for purposes like signing credit card reciepts.

(I may be a little fuzzy on the details because I was waiting with diminishing patience to find out how expensive it would be to fix what was wrong with my car.)

What’s especially bothersome to me is that most of the non-US people on this board despise George Bush (as they should), so why get so angry when we’re so giddy at the thought of getting rid of him for something a little more Obama-ish?
