Because, by all accounts, Vulcans find the ponn farr, and sex in general, to be shameful and depraved. They have sex because, if they don’t, they’ll die.
You guys assume that Vulcan women/men go without sex for 7 years…maybe on the other hand they have to recuperate for 7 years!
I had my moments of wild gorilla sex where I couldn’t lift the arms or pelvis at any more than a slight angle. Maybe hot Ponn Farr will knock you out for a serious amount of time.
I mean Spock always seemed to walk with a stick up his ass…and I know I don’t do any flying high kicks after a 9 hour happy time with Mrs Bitties and her best portrayal of Cavegirl, so maybe the ol Vulcan metabolism sinks em to repair and recover.

Perhaps the driving force of Ponn Farr is the mind link(if it was just the sex they could get that most anywhere) and while they are there they are so um…discombobulated they go at it like bunnies…which was the intended thing to happen anyways…sure they don’t like OUTSIDERS knowing their private sexual business but that doesn’t mean among themselves they are ashamed of their urges…procreation is after all very logical(doesn’t mean they want the neighbors watching though)
Maybe the seven year span is why they say “Live long and prosper.”

I KNOW I read something from one of the writers of TOS saying the “only every seven years” people are wrong – the implication, like some have said, is that they MUST every seven years, but they can at any other time they want. Unfortunately, I forget the name of said writer – it was a woman, but I am completely blanking on her name.
