Are you a pet racist?

Nope. Which ever one responds best to me at the animal shelter. I do have a bias for cuteness though.

oh, it occurs to me that I might not have got my dog if she had pink skin and would have been more likely to have skin issues (breed problem). She has dark skin under her white coat, so she’s not prone to dermatitis. Colour might come into play in that kind of consideration. Also, the “cat orphanage” says the cats with white fur/pink skin have to be indoor only cats, so they were directing my to the dark-skinned cats who didn’t have to be kept out of the sun. (I ended up getting my new cat from a different orphanage and she just happens to be dark.)

For some reason black cats find me …only other color I’ve ownedned is black and white …but at one time me and Mom had 13 black cats…

Let me guess, you live in Salem, Massachusetts?

I always liked that Sabrina the Teenage Witch owned a black cat named Salem.

I can’t afford to replace all the knick knacks so we need to continue to adopt Boston Terriers.

I will admit a preference for gray cats - my Ziva is a beautiful long-haired gray girl with golden eyes - but I like tuxedo cats, too, and gingers, and black cats, and, well, cats in general.

My daughter is living with us and including her animals, we have 2 black pugs, 2 black cats, one tortie, one Bengal, and the aforementioned gray long-hair. So apart from the bits of orange in the tortie, our pets are pretty monochromatic.

We’ve had a black and a chocolate Lab, both great dogs. But black is the classic Lab color.

I’ll cop to it. I have a thing for white cats. Not albino, just all white.

Iv’e had three or four over the years, two of them deaf - it’s a genetic thing for all white cats that pops up every now and again - and enjoyed them immensely.

I just adopted a 14-year-old white female cat. She’s grumpy and was given to a shelter when her elderly owner went into a home and they didn’t allow pets.

Grump grump grump.

And she’s a food-from-table stealer.

At least cats can be relied on to keep themselves white. My “white” dog on the other hand is white for only a few hours after a bath. sigh.

Two of my dogs are breeds that only come in one colour, chosen first for their work ability ( I used to train and compete) - the Malinois is fawn (there are black Malinois, but that is not a standard colour) and the Dutch Shepherd is brindle. Part of the reason for getting a Dutchie was the brindle colour. We adopted a retired sled dog and one of the things that attracted me to the dog we chose was his, unusual for a sled dog, brindle and white coat. I like the stripey dogs.

For cats, I keep ending up with light coloured cats. Best cat ever, now gone, was a light coloured Burmese. He was joined later in his life by two blue point Siamese cats, who are also now gone. I wasn’t going to get another cat, but we found a very sick and cold flame point Siamese mix one winter day a couple of years ago. As soon as I saw his blue eyes, I knew I was sunk and he was going to stay if his owner didn’t claim him. He is such a nice cat, and puts up with the dogs, so no regrets on that decision.

So dark dogs and light cats seems to be a pattern, in the last decade, though not really on purpose, just seems to have worked out that way.

Most of the pets in my life have been strays who adopted us, and their fur has been of what color pleases God.

That said, I’ve never known a calico cat that wasn’t nasty, so I’d seriously think twice about one of those.

We are cat people and have had a variety of cats of different colors and fur types.

The only one I didn’t like the looks of was one I would describe as “Looked as if someone puked on her.” But she was Mrs. FtG’s before I was Mrs. FtG’s.

As far as dogs go, I have a phobia. With black being the scariest. Not sure when it started but I had to have been really, really young.

I didn’t answer the poll. I don’t choose pets. They choose me. I do love the marmalade cats, and I’ve had a few, but all arrived unbidden. Same with current dog and two cats. They either just show up or people give them to me.

A friend found a week-old kitten and told me about her. I said, “Have you named her?” and he said, “Yeah, ThelmaLou’s Cat.” Seriously. I took her a couple of weeks later–how could I not? I bottle-fed her and raised her up and love her to bits–she’s now 7. The friend passed away earlier this year and it makes TLC all the more precious to me.

No but ------------- I do have a slight preference for solid and well defined colors over odd patchwork patterns.

Oh my yes, I am. I admire the design aesthetic of certain animals.

My favorite is the black and white of Boston Terriers. For Frenchies, I prefer the dark gray. I also like the “burnt” black on brown look for dachshunds.

In cats I tend to monochrome, something about stripes and patches don’t work for me. Although light with dark tips does hold an appeal to me. Now if there was a common domesticated cat variety with spots or circle-spots, I would go for that too.

I want an attractive pet but the basic color of its coat doesn’t factor much into its attractiveness. Black, Brown, Striped, Spots, etc so long as it looks pleasing to me.

My dog while growing up: black lab. My 1st dog as an adult: black (mostly) pit mix. My current dog: black (mostly) mix. Yeah, I guess so, but I hope the dogs are not bothered by it - it just happened that way.

Tangent: neighbors of ours have white Lexus cars. He drives a white Lexus SUV, she drives a while Lexus sedan, and when they needed a 3rd car for their driving teens, added another white Lexus sedan. The grandparents also drive a white Lexus SUV. No, none of them work at a Lexus dealership. Our cars are silver, ruby, and dark grey.

Probably not that common, but there’s a variety called Australian Mist (used to be called Spotted Mist) that has spots.

I prefer black & white tuxedo dogs. I’ve owned several boston terriers.

They’re all cute. My mom owns silver and brown yorkies.

All our dogs are short hair. Long hair dogs are too much hassle to groom.

I wouldn’t be interested in a hairless dog. They look sickly.
