Are you a pet racist?

They won’t necessarily chum up. My older cat is a cranky pants, she didn’t like my girls I had before, and she doesn’t like my new cat. Some cats are just “antisocial”.

My wife and I are a mixed-race couple (black/white). This is appropriately reflected in our “children,” as we have an all-white cat, a cat who is a mix of black and white spots, and an all-black cat. We didn’t plan it that way.

Genetics, man.

It sounds like something from an episode of “Bewitched”. The cats got mixed up and ended up with the spotted one.

All three cats I’ve owned made their way to me and I accepted them the way they were. A friend was moving where pets weren’t allowed, so he gave me his unnamed kitty, who was promptly named Get Off The Bed, You Stupid Cat! Stupid for short (the vet office refused to put “Stupid” on his records and was just ‘Cat’). She was a black and white. 5 when we got her, 13 when she passed.

We next got a 9/11 rescue cat. An office bot who worked in the same cubical building as I did worked with an organization that rescued cats and dogs from the rubble. She brought us Plunket, a black, tan and white tabby. He was my most curmudgeonly of babies. He passed earlier this year at the ripe old age of either 20 or 21.

Finally there’s Camry. Three years after getting Plunket we were visiting my dad in The Bronx for Christmas when my husband saw what he thought was a rat in the wheel well. Nope, it was a teeny, tiny grey and white tabby that my son chased through the snow until he caught him. He really did stink up the car on that drive home. We all promised my husband we would find a good home for him, and we did. He’s still in that good home 17 years later, annoying as fuck.

So I don’t pick my cat color at all, they pick me.

I’m a big fan of pit bulls – we’ve had several pits and mixes with outstanding personalities. But they’ve all been different colors…pit bulls have not been bred to physical conformation, fortunately, so there’s little in the way of consistency in their looks.

Like Sailboat, I am also a huge fan of pit bulls. I love them all, but I have a soft spot for white pit bulls with brown brindle patches.

Any other breed of dog, no color preference. Not preference for color in cats at all.

Once you’ve had a black cat, you never go back.

I’ve had tuxedos, calicoes, an orange tabby, a gray, and an all white. And four black cats. Blacks have a lot of personality, I find. Well, they all do, but blacks just sparkle more.

Concerning my post about getting Noir Kitty a friend:

This is one of the reasons I’m hesitating getting him a friend. I know it takes time for a cat to get used to sharing his home with another cat. Sometimes it takes a long, long time, if ever. Plus, I just don’t know if the Big Crow and I are up to having a younger cat around just now.

I lost my sweet 12-year-old black cat to lymphoma last month. I haven’t decided when/if I’m getting another, but the only replacement I can contemplate at the moment is another black one. Maybe with time that will broaden but right now the loss is still too raw.

My older cat lived with my other girls for quite a while before they died. She’s used to sharing her home, but she hangs out alone, and she never snuggled or interacted with the other girls. She’s fine with my new cat (insofar as she doesn’t fight or do anything to hurt her) being here, but she also isn’t going to be snuggling any time soon (if ever). She hisses at any of them who get too close to her. She is quite an individual, none of my former cats hissed. She tolerates the new girl, which is really good enough not to cause real problems, but it’s like I have 2 separate cats, not a pair.

5 dogs:

2 entirely black (Scotties)
1 96% black (mutt)
1 50% black (tri-colored Basset Hound)
1 tan (mutt)

Then make sure the new cat can come on a foster basis only until you are certain it’s a good match.

What about different species of pets? Does that count? For example, I’d always have a cat but never a dog. Nevertheless, I do like dogs. Some of my best friends are dogs. I would just never live with one.

I think our tabby cat is more good-looking than either of our tuxedo cats. But we didn’t pick any of our cats based on their looks.

First pet my wife and I bought together was a rat. We had a choice between all white and white with a black head. We went with the two colour rodent because I didn’t want an all white rat. Said all white rat was purchased early the following morning since rat 1 looked so miserable without rat 2.

Since then we’ve got dogs and colour wasn’t really a consideration only size.

I’ve mentioned this before here, but when the time comes, I want a black cat so I can call it Willis and say “whatchoo talkin’ 'bout, Willis?” when it meows. That’s what I’ve been saying but if I fall in love with some other kitty, Willis is going to have a sibling (probably not called Arnold, though).
