Aw, Labdad! Now everyone will know!
(Of course, according to my membership card, Turtles are supposed to go out and find new members, but ya gotsta have the test!)
Not a turtle, you bet your sweet ass, but aware of them.
You bet your sweet ass I am. I have been a turtle since nineteen seventy two. Why I remember when being a turtle meant something (slowly rocking in her rocking chair). When the blushes came fast and furious, and no one would even hint at the fact that that statement could be construed as a double entendre. Time when we wondered what a sweet bibby was, and why we would bet one. Yep, there was a certain grandeur to being a turtle in those halcyon days of yore, days when you could still embarrass, truely embarrass a teen ager with a sexual innuendo.
I wanna Turtle!
::stamps foot::
NOW!
You bet your sweet ass I am!
You don’t get a turtle, dear, you become one.
You bet your sweet ass I am! Also since 1972.
You bet your sweet ass I am.
But I’d be glad to buy you a drink anyway

It’s so nice to see so many Dopers know the answer to the question.
But I cannot remember if there was a secret handshake, too, or not?
As for the rest of you who did not answer the question correctly, if at all, let’s just pass it off that you are too young to know or were never initiated at the time.
1972? 1972??!!??
You call that OLD?
I’ll have you know that my card is dated (squints at moth-eaten card through his trifocals) December 20, 19-and-68! By Stanley Kuzara hisself! You betcher sweet ass that’s old! Or I’m old! Or I’m a turtle! Or something!
(Mutters unintelligibly about “young whippersnappers” until led away by the ward attendant for bedtime gruel & warm milk.)

To be precise leechbabe wishes to play with the snake that she has heard oft follows the turtle.
