Area code look-up help, please.

Today when I got home I had a strange (and mildly disturbing) telephone message on the machine.

The caller left a call back number. It was a 7 digit number with a 3 digit prefix. Not wanting to call, I tried to find it on the net. So far no go.

The prefix given was 632.

These sites show no such number:
http://www.cs.ucsd.edu/users/bsy/area.html

Same for reverse directory:
http://www.reversephonedirectory.com/

And the Philippines (he indicated he traveled there often):
http://phone-codes.islandsphilippines.com/

So cell phone? If anyone can verify what city/state this prefix is in I would greatly appreciate it.

I don’t see anything listed for area code 632, but area code 623 is assigned to Arizona.

Maybe try switching those two numbers in the phone number and running it through Google for the reverse lookup - it may not give you a name, but it might.
It’s not listed as a country code either.

Thanks. Still nothing.
“We’re sorry. We did not find a listing for the phone number you entered.”

632 is a Manila area code.

Odds are good that this was an attempt to scam you out of some serious dough by tricking you into calling an international equivalent of a “976” or “900” number.

Thanks. He did specify Manilla.

I feel better.

Still puzzled, but better.

What was the phone message?

I don’t say my name on my outgoing message. It’s an unlisted number - if you have it you know me…I hope. Plus I moved to this state recently so I’ve only had service for about 5-6 weeks (no forwarding from my old number).
He called me by my first and last name, said he was calling to say hi/how have you been. He acted as if we knew each other. Referenced a town in CA I have visited. Asked how (name of old girlfriend) was. Said to call him as he wanted to talk and was now in Manil[l]a.

I’m writing it off as a fluke or a scam. My name is common enough as is my ex girlfriends. I don’t know anything about Manila, but Id guess only 10-15 people have my number.

Strange.

For all questions area code related, go right to the source:

NANPA: North American Numbering Plan Administration

Specifically, you can search by area code:
http://www.nanpa.com/nas/public/npa_query_step1.do?method=resetNpaReportModel

And see that 632 is not yet in use.

My favorite page, that links to lots of useful stuff:
http://www.nationalnanpa.com/area_codes/index.html

Including the list of new area codes soon to be introduced:
http://www.nationalnanpa.com/nas/public/plannedNpasNotInServiceReport.do?method=displayPlannedNpasNotInServiceReport

Just a few thouhts to toss in –

An unlisted number won’t appear in a reverse/criss-cross directory, or any other resource. (Listed numbers can be used to obtain the name and address of the person.)

Your area phone book (if you’ve received it) has useful information in the first few dozen pages, including the local calling exchanges (i.e. the first 3 numbers after the area code) of your nearby towns and cities.

And just in case it proves useful to anyone else, one can do a google search on a 10 digit phone number to bring up the name of the person and their location, as long as it’s a listed number.

douglips, Thanks for those links and info.

Nimue, I googled me, used a reverse directory for my number, etc. I didn’t show up (phone number-wise) in any of them.
