I don’t think either of these things are true, personally. It wasn’t a particularly shitty thing to do because as far as I can tell Argent was doing it angrily but in good faith. It wasn’t particularly wrong because as I said, I was stumbling upon shit like that when I was in that age range, and I bet many people were.
You wanna impart your personal philosophy to children, have some.
And if you don’t want your children learning that sometimes people in the world hold different values and ideas from those in their home (sometimes different, sometimes bad, sometimes disgusting, sometimes evil), don’t let them on the internet. I read and listened to any and everything I could from a young age. All sorts of novels with various bits of rape and bdsm and this and that. Porn magazines, when I could find them. 2 Live Crew tapes, when those were going around. In other words, an average kid. Hogg is so far above and beyond anything I stumbled over - ever - that I can’t even begin to compare.
And I didn’t even dislike the book and have suggested it to a few other adults as an interesting, if completely pornographic and fucked up, read.
I really don’t see what’s difficult to understand about the distinction between writing on the board to a general audience, and deliberately contacting what we must presume to be a minor.
You know, I’ve got my own doubts about Curtis. But being a grownup and all, I’d err on the side of caution. Because grownups are expected to behave in grownup ways.
The issue is that even AT admits it was a boneheaded move to PM Curtis. Mistake made, addressed, etc.
But the fact that people in this thread are actually using that interaction to actually suggest that AT is some pedo that is grooming his next victim is far more disgusting and alarming than the poor judgment shown by AT.

So just to be clear, here: he demurred and expressed that his parents (who are his legal guardians and have the right to make such decisions) would likely not want him to read the material and you continued to encourage him to do so anyway? At 13 (or around there), I read Naked Lunch, The Satanic Bible, and Last Exit To Brooklyn. They certainly didn’t give me nightmares or turn me into a perv. Fact is, 13 year-olds generally love transgressive shit. Go sit in the audience of any slasher/torture-porn movie if you doubt me.

I haven’t read the thread in question, I don’t read many of Curtis’ posts. While I wouldn’t be recommending this particular book to anyone (as I hadn’t heard of it before), what if I told someone underage to go buy an issue of Hustler (for the articles, of course)? Is it my responsibility to know which posters are underage?
