Arrested Development 11/07

Who’s Ann?

I can’t believe that I just realized (when I saw the certificate for being the pagent judge) that “Gob” is his initials - for George Oscar Bluth.

I would have completely missed the “camel tow/cameltoe” joke if I hadn’t seen the discussion about cameltoes on this board not long ago.

I also loved the scene where Michael gets fed up with his dad using the surrogate from the other room – as George Sr. protests, you can hear Larry repeating his dialogue in the background on a three-second delay.

Yes, Mae Whitman is definitely cute. But in the context of Arrested Development, this one always makes me laugh:

Mr F = Mentally Retarded Female

Why are my handlebars in my bed?

Jet pants vs Mole

Is she running the lights or something?

Choosing between the Popemobile and a Humvee, George decided to take the vehicle that was bulletproof

Turns out a fake Popemobile doesn’t stop real bullets

I thought she was making monster noises but she was just out of vodka

STEVE HOLT/UNCLE MIKE!!!

You know the sad part?

I’ve seen every episode of that show. I loved it.

As far as last night, the ‘pussy’ moments made me lose it. And I’m glad I’m not the only one who screamed "Annyong!’ as soon as he appeared!

E.

When I heard it I did a mental “wtf?” and I redid it with closed captioning and it said “Anne with camel tow.”

Annyong said “Annyong?.. hello?”
And the captioning read “Hello?.. annyong?”

I thought that was a nice touch.

Anyone ever notice that Kitty Sanchez(Judy Greer) and Maeby(Alia Shawkat) are both in Three Kings , though they share no scenes?

I always just thought that was a weird coincidence.

I loved Rita’s recreation of the Julia Roberts/necklace box moment from Pretty Woman, even to the putting the hand on her sternum before falling apart.

I’d love to see more of the Tunnel of Love Indubitable.

I wonder how long before Erin Moran comes on board with some connection to Bob Oblaw.

Another visual gag that might have been easily missed happened when Rita was talking to Michael on the phone, and you could see Dave Thomas in the background, simultaneously brushing his teeth and puffing on a cigarette. At the end, when Rita was about to run off with Michael, she said something about having to hurry and leave before her uncle got out of the shower for another cigarette.

Did anyone notice that her note to her uncle was just a tracing of her hand, like a 5-year-old does?

I think these kind of threads are essential to enjoying the show; no matter how carefully you watch, you’re bound to miss something. Also, the show runs the gamut of comedy from clever in-jokes (like Anyong) to out-and-out slapstick (Rocketman vs. the Mole).

And somehow Dave Thomas’s character deduced from the frowny face on the hand, she was getting married.

You omitted the funniest part!

The british soldier says, brandishing a cigarette (paraphrasing), “After coming back from the field, I like nothing better than to put a [bleep] in my mouth”.

To which Ron Howard responds, “That also meant something different”.

I’m trying to replay her scenes in my mind to recognize what other clues there are that she’s retarded.

The train set for George Michael seemed something that any fun loving adult would recommend. I’m guessing that pretty much all other indicators would be along the same lines.

What was in the box that she wanted so badly? (I’ve missed some episodes so I don’t know if it’s explained.)

“You can always tell when the person isn’t really English.”

It was chocolate

One of the creators of Arrested is Richard Rosenstock, who was one of the head writers over the course of Happy Days. He must have really been hiding his light under a bushel during the Garry Marshall years. (It’s funny to me that Garry Marshall is absolutely hysterical as a character actor [he stole every episode of Murphy Brown that he was in] and as a personality, but his shows [possible exception of The Odd Couple, which I don’t remember very well] and most of his movies are some of the corniest and most by-the-numbers ventures in the history of Hollywood.)

In the first episode she was in, she mentioned her kindergarten class. Michael commented on her teaching kindergarten. She said “It’s almost like they teach me.”

(Or was that first grade?)

Did anyone notice that the Church and State announcment came in a paper called the “News Testament”?

I liked the mix up between the CIA and CAA. What was the joke about the CIA being responsible for (X) and CAA being responsible for Love, Indubitably.

Recently production was shut down so Bateman could have surgery on his vocal cords. I thought his voice sounded raspy in last night’s episode.

I’m ready for the British story to be over. The second episode last night was much better considering the British stuff was secondary to the main action. AD is at its best when the family members are all involved in one big storyline. This season has had too many side characters that have played extended roles.

The CIA was responsible for one disaster (Bay of Pigs), CAA a different disaster (Love, Indubitably).
