Artists show your work!

Thanks for starting it, I always enjoy these threads, even if I have nothing to contribute (it’s been years since I last took a pencil to paper, my current medium of choice is the doodlepad to amuse my kids).

I have commented on your art before. The summary is that besides a few choice pieces, most of it I find ho-hum. I have always liked the white flowers on the black background. Of the new stuff, I really like “The Distance”. I am not an art critic, but I know there is something VERY different about that one from the rest of your pieces, even if I don’t know what it is. I find it very well edited, in that it has what it needs to have to be fun and nothing else.

And definitely start selling. You would be surprised of how some people will love what you think sucks (and you can turn a blind eye to those who hate what you think is great, someone else will be there shortly to love it)

Cool stuff. I like better the ones with backgrounds (even though I worked as a scientific illustrator and I am used to floating images). Are they retouched photos or fully hand painted?

The “Small Beach” would look awesome blown up to huge dimensions with the watercolor texture showing. And there is something I really like about “Picnic Tree” even if I can’t figure out what it is. And I think it is great that you are selling them. Are they in a gallery or sold online? Maybe you could offer some advice on selling your pieces to the rest of the crowd here who might be considering it.

Most people here are posting their work and not commenting on the work of others. Most people’s pieces haven’t been commented at all. YOU have not commented on most people’s art. If this thread is going to be about someone (and it isn’t) it should be the OP, there is nothing special about your pieces that deserves more comments than the rest.

In my case, you can take my lack of commentary as politeness.

A lot of talent in this thread, and I haven’t even seen it all yet.

I doodle, mostly, but I love to appreciate art, especially comic book art. My brother is a comic book artist, and I grew up around his talent. I used to trace his drawings when I was little, and I think it helped me understand a little bit about drawing.

The only good thing I have scanned is this picture I drew of Hellboy a few months ago. I get nervous about showing people what I’ve drawn. My latest obsession is Sandman, so I may end up drawing a few characters from that.

Hobbyist photographer here. See my gallery at my website.

Are photographs ok?

Agent Towers, you have no class, and less talent.

Those are really nice! I think I’ve been to Glendalough–it sounds familiar but it was 2001 when we were in Ireland so I can’t be certain. I especially like the leaves, but then, I have a weird thing about leaves.

Who digs Science Fiction?

This is actually a collaboration between my best friend and I. He’s working on his student film at CCS, and he’s come up with a ship design that he modeled in Cinema 4D. It’s supposed to be like a shipwreck in space. The other night, I added the texture, lighting and setting to it, so he could get a better feel of the final result. I thought it came out pretty damn cool, and can’t wait to see the rest of his final vision come to life, which he’s been so kind to let me give input on and work together on.

The Czar.
Also, I haven’t had time to go through everyone’s art and photography yet, but I will make some comments soon!

My husband, at the urging of our youngest, drew this. The boy didn’t erase that for almost 2 months (then it fell off the desk).

He draws a lot of different stuff, usually at the request of the kids. Of course it’d be nice if he used a permanent medium everytime. A lot of his stuff is on napkins and such that he finds laying about. He is currently doing a pencil of my boys for my Christmas present.

Kickass. The Magnadoodle is, indeed, a difficult medium. (wink)

Would love to see his Etch-a-Sketch work. (wink x 2)

You have even less class than I do. At least I didn’t insult anyone else’s work.

And just in case anyone’s interested - here are three more drawings.

I do, I do! That’s pretty good. I like the proportions of that ship. Mean and chunky. It reminds me a lot of the ships I used to draw in college. Except that I preferred closer angles that exaggerated the size. Which you might try in a couple clicks, if you have the model.

Maybe a bit sharper?

Heh. Make fun all you want. It IS a difficult medium. I am surprised my kids like it so much, they can do a ton better on paper. This is cheaper, of course, so I am not fighting them.

Well, you are very consistent. I’ll give you that.

Awesome stuff in this thread. I apologize for lacking the time right now to comment on everyone - I’ll do it soon, I swear

Here are a few of mine. I’m more of a dabbler than any sort of artist, so they are in all sorts of media. Some of this stuff I’ve posted before here and there.

Here’s a mirror based on a pastiche of Indonesian themes (ceramic, glazed, and bevelled glass):

Here’s a Mayan forest god (watercolour, pine bark):

Here’s a sculpture of a fantasy pirate ship done in clay with wire, glaze and paint (and a little epoxy putty):

another view:

An oil painting of a death’s head, wearing a rotting bonnet - a memento mori:

A sketch from “life” on which the painting was based (pen & ink):

A walking stick (made of wood, deer antler, and malachite):

shurg maybe because I’m not an artist (does quilting or cross stitch count?) I was overly impressed with the flying Nazgul magnadoodle. About the most I can draw on that thing is a flower.

I can barely draw a flower, and most of my drawings of other stuff are pretty wonky, so I’m in the same boat as you. I can sew, embroider, and am learning to knit things other than simple scarves, but I’m not so great on the drawing/painting/sculpting thing. I do, however, live with an artist, so I can at least throw ideas at him and see them created. Even his doodles look really awesome. When I get better at web page design, I’ll be making his website prettier and easier to navigate.

Do you have the pattern for this hat? It looks really neat! I might someday like to make a hat like that.

I like that death’s head, Malthus.

I am glad that the thread is so popular. I did try to take to heart some of the advice I got from my last thread where I solicited critiques. At the very least, I do put more thought into what I’m doing, and do practice sketching a little bit more.

Thank you for your honesty on my work. I don’t expect everyone to love all my work (or even like it at all) but I’m glad that a few are decent. I had done Roads and Roads 2 a few months ago, and while I liked them OK, I thought that something was missing. I think it’s the color choices and the lack of outlines on the roads. Since it’s just blocks of solid color with no shading, it makes it look too flat. So with The Distance I used the slightly darker grey to outline the water tower, and the darker green to outline the trees and I think it helped. It still looked a little flat or empty or something, because I just had the water tower against the clear blue sky, so I added the clouds to help the balance, since someone had said last time that I had trouble with balance on some of my paintings. I think that helped it come out well. Does that make sense?

I definitely don’t think that all of my work is great- if I was only going to post the work I’m really proud of I would probably take more than half of the paintings down, but I do think I’m learning from the ones that come out good and the ones that come out bad.
Now enough about me. I have to say that cmyk I am really impressed by the shipwreck picture. It looks very professional.

And Unsquare Dance, I like your Hellboy drawing. I hope you’ll share more of your stuff in the future.

This is Cafe Society and not the Pit. Insults are not allowed.

And if you feel someone has insulted you, the thing to do is to report the post and let a mod handle it; otherwise, if you respond with another insult, you end up with a warning as well.

I apologize. Really, I was being a little baby about it, and I’m sorry for it. Please carry on.
