I’ve been meaning to see that in Vegas, but they only play it on Fridays and Saturdays and my recent trips have all fallen during the week. How is it? Is it more horror or comedy? Do I need to bring a tarp and a poncho with me, Gallagher-style, if I’m gonna be sitting up front?
Did you notice all the empty space between the ganglia? Not surprising since they were their brains. How does Ash find people dumber than him?
I kind of expected the demon to stop, look at Ash and say -
“This isn’t hurting you in the least, is it?”
Ending the show with The Stooges, the Pride of Detroit, was a great touch.
Just to be clear, Fun House, side one, is the greatest single side of any album ever. Just that one side, because it leaves you so drained you can’t get up and flip the album. Or is that because you are too drunk and high to get up? Whatever. The morning DJ on WXRT told the story of how a pal went to an Iggy concert to relive his misspent youth in the Motor City. Iggy was throwing water bottles to the crowd and the friend caught one with his head, giving him a concussion. The newswoman said the only appropriate thing one could say, and said it in an appropriately solemn and respectful manner, “That is so punk.” Indeed, it is.
“It says that he preys on the spiritually and mentally weak.”
“Yeah…well…he can do that on his own time.”
"First of all you don’t look anything like your photo, so you might want to update that.”
This episode ended too soon. Talk about a cliffhanger.
Kelly’s now possessed by Eligos, which, despite being a “lesser” demon, appears to be far more subtle when it takes over a body than the Evil is. Ash’s evil hand and his mechanical hand both make reappearances. We finally get to see what it is the characters are seeing when the Raimi-cam comes flying at them. And Ash’s trip was… well, a trip. From the sound of it, they’re going to have to travel back to the original cabin in order to stop the Evil.
Choice lines:
“When evil shows up, it blows up. …Still working on the catch-phrase.”
“I always wanted to spend some time in a place so nice they named it… Jacksonville.”
“Hey, brujo, I got two hands! I NEED TWO BEERS!”
Definitely. This is really where the 30-minute runtime kills them.
Though I am enjoying that it’s basically a five-hour movie split into chunks. It’ll be great for rewatching.
“Have you seen his pillow? It’s completely black, like his head is made of coal.”
“Or ashes!”
Some very minor details I noticed. Ash’s car had an (outdated) Michigan license plate on the front (which Michigan hasn’t used since an even more outdated type of plate than that one) yet his trailer has a Wisconson license plate.
Anyway, regarding my previous comments about some of the FX work, I think they’ve gotten better since the first episode. That summoned demon is hella creepy.
It’s okay. He parked on the border.
According to this interview with one of the designers, Eligos is almost entirely practical aside from the flickering and the actor’s eyes being removed in post. Which just goes to show that there’s still room for practical effects in this day and age.
Another great episode last night, and one that really ratcheted up the tension level. Sorry to see Pablo’s uncle go - this series just keeps building interesting characters and then killing them off right away. Of course, this is Evil Dead, so the life expectancy for anyone not named Ashley J. Williams is pretty short by default. One wonders if Eligos is truly defeated this time or if he’s going to show up again. I loved that the throwaway gag from episode 2 about Kelly being Jewish actually got a callback in a major plot moment.
Was that a cover of “Stranglehold” that played over the ending? It didn’t quite sound like the original to me, and I divested myself of my Nuge CDs after he turned out to be a racist asshole so I can’t recall for sure.
Choice lines:
“I’m gonna shove this thing right up some Deadite’s ass.”
“Aww, man! I just got that taped!”
“I think El Brujo was trying to send me a message. Or burn the shit out of me, because this thing’s still really hot.”
They’re thinking about it too much!
Maybe it was a different thread that I pointed this out, but does anybody else see similarity between the theme music and a piece used in “The Dead Zone”?
Can you link to samples of both?
I tried finding the “Dead Zone” piece online but couldn’t.
Continuity is loose with those movies and my memory is bad. Did Ash come to the cabin once or twice? In the latest episode, he says some stuff about the “last time” he came to the cabin, but it almost sounds like they merged Evil Dead 1 and 2. He says he was “hoping to get laid” and ended up “chopping my hand off with a chainsaw”.
Is the show merging the first two movies?
I really liked how they just went through with this whole ‘hero’s remorse’-thing—“Everyone I love dies, so you better stay the hell away from me!”—“No Ash, together, we can beat this!”—dies. A lesser show would have had some kind of redemption arc where the hero eventually realizes that he isn’t cursed, that there is true hope only in fighting together rather than in the solitary way—not this one.
I was a bit disappointed at the lack of nod towards Army of Darkness re the evil twin situation—something along the lines of ‘this feels oddly familiar!’ perhaps.
