Ash vs Evil Dead

I think Raimi is on the verge of developing Raimi-cam into a new form of cinematic art. Poor camera crew, must be forced to amph up inbetween takes…

anyone else see the lead female in a RECENT verizon or state farm commercial? she is in it for 2 seconds. just the side of her at a table right at the beginning. i knew i recognized her horrible acting from somewhere!!

i like Bruce Campbell and Army Of Darkness a ton but the acting in the show is wretched and i havent been keeping up. the female lead from state farms face doesnt move and her speaking voice sucks. too much plastic surgery and drinking.

im waiting for Call Saul

That ending…was unexpected. What do you guys think of him taking the truce deal?

I’m not sure what my final thoughts are on this new Ash we have in this show. I’ve loved the show, but I kind of miss cool Ash from Army of Darkness.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a story end with the hero accepting the Devil’s deal, but then again, it’s perfectly in character for Ash - he’s always looking for the easy way out, and even when he’s not just thinking about himself, he still is. Perfect conclusion to a gorefest of an episode that may have out-Evil-Deaded the originals - even the tree rape scene from the original wasn’t as cringe-inducing as possessed Pablo puking up creepy children. Season 2 can’t get here soon enough.

Favorite exchanges;

“Fine. A normal life, in Jacksonville, for the three of us. And ten thousand dollars cash.
“I’m not a bank.”
“…Gas money?”
“Fine. Gas money.”

“So you wanna take control of all the demons like in the Godfather?”
“Yes.”
“Well, I hated that movie. Too long, too boring, and not enough boobies. I’m more of a Death Wish guy.”

The more I think about, the more I like it: I’m envisioning Ash becoming humanity’s last hope(ahhh, the horror!). So, Mitt Romney with chainsaw arm, his puerto rican, child-puking shaman side-kick, and a jewish girl very excited by blood, will hopefully save the world? Or just stay in Jacksonville, maybe. Hopefully, Mitt’s his ex-attraction and her very direct interpretation of puppet mastery will show up again.

I was really hoping the drop dead gorgeous blonde would make it somehow, never seen her before but damn…

Oh and I wholeheartedly agree. In spite of all we may disagree upon, I have to admit you have great taste in fiction!

Pablo’s supposed to be Honduran, for the record, though he told Mr. Roper at ValueStop that he was from New Jersey.

Samara Weaving, of Australia. You may have heard of her uncle Hugo.

Wait, Pedro is not from New Jersey?!

You must’ve really whacked your beaner back there.

Yep, Hugo Weaving’s niece. I was hoping she might join the show.

AVclub speculated that the “Pedro” slipup may have been an on-set screwup by Bruce Campbell, but they kept it since it is in character. I actually almost agree and would like to hear if it was scripted. It’s a simple error and his recovery looked natural. I don’t think he’s mixed up his name before. He cares enough to know his name even if he still thinks he’s Mexican.

Ray Santiago, by the way, is an American of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent.

A fun series to binge-watch on a cold rainy Sunday. Loved Eli the talking lizard with human teeth.

Agreed. I mentioned it back on Page 1, but this Ash seems a lot different from the one we saw in Army of Darkness. I know it’s 30 years later and that we got a, more or less, different Ash in each movie, but something still felt off about him.

But I still loved the whole thing and watching all the episodes straight through before the finale really cemented that the whole series is just one long movie. And in that respect, it hit everything I was looking for in an Evil Dead 4.

Interesting.

By the way, I really like the parts where the production teem proudly explains the gore and effects. Pablo’s mask is a pretty impressive piece of a physical prop!

“I broke up with you at just the right time!”

I think what is “off” is that Bruce Cambell seems to be having so much fun being Ash that it’s coming across in the actual character. Which might not be a bad thing. In spite of all the “horror”, killing Deadites seemed to be the only thing Ash is good at and he hasn’t done much else in 30 years.

Army of Darkness Ash was a bit meaner and a lot more constantly agitated than he is now.

Great show. Stylistically, it’s somewhere between Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, with a few extra helpings of blood and better special effects.

The only real downside was how short it was. 10 episodes at 25 minutes each is pretty much a 4 hour movie. I expected to have something to watch for a few days and ended up watching it all in an evening.

The only negative aspects for me were:

That the cop lady (Amanda) went from trying to catch him to trying to lock lips with him in a nano-second, and it didn’t quite make sense. As others have noted, Ash isn’t quite the “Give me some sugar baby” cocksure ass that he was in AoD. And Amanda isn’t a pampered, medieval princess who didn’t understand half of what Ash is saying. He laid a couple of decent lines on her, but she seemed to already be lovey-dovey for him before that so…dunno.

Usually, I love Lucy Lawless. I’ve never seen Xena, but she was great in both BSG and Spartacus, and brightened up what would otherwise have been a fairly standard episode of Burn Notice, as a guest star. But here she was just sort of “Lucy Lawless with black eyes.” She did fine as the villain, but she didn’t kick ass at it. Maybe that’s just down to the special effects / writing. She basically looked like a human throughout the big showdown, which makes her a bit dull compared to everything they’re fighting, and she didn’t do much beyond cheer on Pablo and threaten Ash with a postcard.

But, they were setting up for future seasons so I assume that they were trying to avoid a full-out confrontation between her and Ash until some future season.

I think I’d like to see the show expand to 40 minute episodes. Not enough for a full B plot, but just a little more character time, so that a binge watch of the series isn’t pure blood bath following blood bath. Granted, I like the blood better than Walking Dead’s soap opera, but the show wouldn’t hurt with a bit more character development. The showrunner appears to have worked as a producer on Reaper, and the best part of that show was the fun, tight friendship between the main characters. I could see something similar in this show, except with Ash being the odd-man out on it, where they all trust each other and him, but he’s sending the younger fighters in as redshirts so that he can be lazy and hit on chicks, but then realizing that he does care about them after all, so he has to go in and save the day. And, again, I think that that sort of stalling and hemming and hawing through the fights would help add to the humor of the show, so a little more time in each episode could add just a little bit more shine.

But it doesn’t need any of that. It is a solid show.

So, nobody else thought the last three or so episodes were spinning their wheels? They were near the cabinet, and they threw in some generic distractions to run out the clock – some gang, a new set of teenagers. At some point, the random encounters start to look like the GM failed to prep this week. Why did those Australian kids show up? Seemed like they were there to run out the clock.

I think that they needed some people to die at the cabin. Since it’s an out-of-the-way building with no inhabitants, there’s no one to kill except main characters and the main characters (except black ones) can’t die. Ergo, you need some hikers if you want to get enough blood to make the cabin seem sufficiently scary.

The season 2 trailer is here!

Ruby: “I need you to help me get the book back and send those things back to hell.”
Ash: “You know what I need? To be back in Jacksonville, on my second keg of beer, stuffing my man-meat into the middle of a mother-daughter sandwich.”
Ruby: “I’m already regretting calling you here.”

Looks like we’ll be getting plenty more of the gore and black humor we’ve come to love.
