After a couple of well-deserved lobsters, and since it is now past 7:30 in the Pacific Time Zone, I can acknowledge that I did not win my first round game. That is how I have been putting it, I did not lose, I just didn’t win.
It was however, a lot of fun and I will get the $5,000 minimum just for playing. The Jeopardy staff is great and the other contestants are a pleasure to be with. right before Alex was introduced, I turned to the 2 other contestant and said “Good luck, guys” Too bad the good luck was evenly divided between Bruce and Diane, rather than all the luck going to Bruce and none to Diane.
I didn’t quite have it that day, and was beaten by a slightly better player. And I can always say that I lost by a dollar.
And I am one of the 144 best players to ever appear on Jeopardy FWIW.
AFAIK there is still a Doper carrying the flag for Uncle Cecil-- h. sapiens. Although I am not sure exactly who he or she is. I am assuming he or she will be participating.
Yes, I did mouth “Hi, Opal”, either we have some lip-readers or good guessers on the Board tonight. If stumped for an answer, I was prepared to say What are 1920’s Style Death Rays, Alex?, but fortunately or unfortunately the opportunity never presented itself.
Well, let’s see, I started out pretty good. Questioned the first two answers correctly. Got to say Let’s make it a true Daily Double, Alex!, and got the Daily Double correct to put me back in the lead. Ended the Jeopardy round $200 off the lead IIRC.
Double Jeopardy was not so good, however. There were several instances where it appeared to be Celebrity Jeopardy on Saturday Night Live. We had a lot of trouble with the Ancient Egyptian Religion category. After Dianne absolutely butchered the word meaning * the attribution of human motivation, characteristics, or behavior to gods* I figured there was no way I would be able to correctly pronounce http://www.bartleby.com/61/wavs/25/A0332500.wav so I didn’t try.
The Before & After jobs category was even worse, I could not even venture a guess at any of them, fortunately Bruce could only come up with one correct answer in that category.
Dianne finished Double Jeopardy with negative winnings, and was therefore not eligible to play Final Jeopardy. I finished Double Jeopardy around $6000 behind the leader.
So to win the game in Final Jeopardy I had to
a) get the answer right & bet enough
b) hope Bruce would get the answer wrong & bet too much
The FJ category was Historic Quotes, and the answer was In 1900 Teddy Roosevelt wrote “I have always been fond of a West African proverb that goes:”
Which may have been the easiest Final Jeopardy question ever-- when I was hoping for a tough one
What is “Speak softly, and carry a big stick?”
Coincidentally I ended up with a final total of $19,200 –
my opponent with $19,201.
Sorry it didn’t turn out better, 5tc, but you did put up an excellent performance in a good game. At trivia night at the bar this evening, I said I felt lucky because I sort of knew someone on Jeopardy! today. We came in second and I made six bucks. So you had a better day, but still, cool to see a Doper living the Jeopardy! dream. I hope they pick me when they come out here next month.
I’ve been following this thread, but I didn’t want to horn in, especially because I just taped my show last week, and it won’t be on until March 16. Obviously, I can’t give much more info either. I’ll probably start a thread a couple days before the show is on just to give people a heads-up.
5 time champ, way to go! I hope you had as much fun as I did.
I didn’t. But the urge was strong. (Is five years too long for a two-year degree?)
By the way, you said you played seven games–the five times you won originally, last night’s, and . . . ? Am I missing something? Anyway, congratulations!
h.sapiens, splendid. I’ll be able to catch that one.
I had a blast rooting you on 5 time champ!
Good job on the SDMB references. I was cracking up (and my girlfriend thought I had lost it. She was more than a little puzzled that I was cheering so much for some strange dude on Jeopardy.)
5 time champ, that was great. Thanks for letting us know you would be on. Tough loss… correction - tough not winning. Those were some of the toughest questions I could recall. (Not that I watch it often, but I’ve been catching it periodically for a long time. Some of my earliest memories are of this show in the early 60s. My mom is a long time fan.)
I was especially proud of the doubling bet on the first Daily Double. A pet peeve of mine is people who bet less than the original question amount. Wimps! And you bet double or nothing on the final question. Yes, true class.
Damnit, my girlfriend and I were watching but I didn’t see this thread so I didn’t even take particular notice. I remember someone saying that they’d been in college for 32 years and I remember the final scores but that’s about it :(.
Are you still on the Jeopardy! website, 5 time champ?
Actually, taping for the first round has not yet finished.
I am not in the tournament myself (I don’t get any special prizes for losing to the very first 5 time champion in her fifth game), but a friend of mine is, and his taping date is Tuesday. March 8th.
He has come from outside the country, and requested the very last taping date to minimize the time he would have to stay if he won.
I haven’t seen the episode you’re on yet, but I’ve been taping the show for my friend to watch (he doesn’t get to see it in Asia) so I’ll make a point to catch the March 1 and March 16 episodes!
