As a matter of fact (as I believe I once mentioned in a long-ago thread on TV-edited movies) I did see The Last Detail once on TV back in the pre-VCR days - with most of Jack Nicholson’s rather “colorful” language bleeped out. Very surreal experience; I’ve been meaning to rent or buy a copy so I see it uncut.
I had forgotten about that reference in the movie, but I recalled the joke and it somehow seemed appropriate in context.
