irishbird you haven’t been around these boards very long. I haven’t been around that long, but in the time I’ve been here I myself have observed several people being just plain ol’ fashioned “dumb as a box of hammers”.
The moderators of the various forums have had to deal with many people flouting the rules, and “disturbing the peace” of the varying intellectual pursuits on the SDMB. Some people don’t post, they litter. That is, their posts contribute nothing in particular to the thread, and are only there to be ugly. It is the moderator’s job to “keep the peace” and “clean up” the litter.
There is a reason why I don’t go into the GQ forum. I’m not famaliar enough with these boards to be able to “stay afloat” there. The rules there are STRICT, and are thoroughly enforced. This is what Manhattan did when he closed the thread, as the other posters here explained. I did not at first understand why the thread was closed either, but once it was explained I saw it.
In short, the idiots Manhattan was referring to were people who did not follow that forum’s rules. That is a sign of low comprehension, which in turn could be seen as a form of idiocy.
That is all. He wasn’t being this incredible snob, and looking down his nose at everyone. I’d be mad too, if I’d warned someone to behave, and they sniffed and tried to claim they were. It’s pretty dumb to cop an attitude with any authority figure. Yes, speak up and assert your rights etc. but be respectful too.
Granted I’m only threorizing, and putting myself in Manhattan (or any moderator’s) place. However, I’d wager I’m not too far off the mark with my ramblings.

I ony asked this because, as Zabali_Clawbane politely pointed out, I haven’t been on these boards very long and I thought that calling dopers idiots was a bit rude, that’s all. So thanks for that Zabali - now I understand. And Desmostylus, I hope you feel better for insulting me. Have a nice day!
irishbird, I know it’s rough, but what Desmostylus did was “spank” you for being green. This board has some curmudgeons on it, who like to wave their verbal canes at us whipper snappers, and make us “toe the line”. 
Take note when they do this though, because often it due to the fact of a subtle cultural infraction. I can understand it in a way, even though it stings. They are trying to preserve the unique cultural nuances this board has.
Just shrug, tell them off if it’s far too harsh, and move on. Take a look at what you did to possibly “provoke” the outburst, and try not to do it again. It’s all you can do.

Thanks Zabali, I’m not taking it personally. Although I haven’t been on here very long, I have had some fun and enjoyed some of the debates I’ve joined in so far. I made a mistake at the start posting in the wrong place and that was pointed out to me politely so I re-read the rules to get the hang of it. I agree with what you said about the curmudgeons (hardly ever hear anyone use that word but it’s a great description lol). The world’s full of nice people, rude people and angry people and a lot of them seem to be in here - I’ll get used to it:)

If you want to use emotes, and quote, or put up links, just hit “preveiw” and copy paste and fiddle with your post to your heart’s content. It’s what I do. I can type a little of the coding now, but I prefer to use the preveiw screen to get my posts right. Also, copy your post before you preveiw, just in case the hamsters are hungry. This way you can just paste what you had typed if it’s lost. (The Hamsters are an “in joke”. The boards are so slow that it’s theorized that they are powered by hamsters, and that they get tired sometimes or hungry and “eat” posts.)

cheers guys, thanks for the encouragement. I went back when I saw the wrong quote and tried it again but it did the same thing. This is what I did - I highlighted the quote in the 3rd message on this page (my message) re: idiots and half-baked blah blah blah but the quote that got posted was “and the idiots are???” so I guess you can’t quote a quote?
Anyway, I’ll try to do better, honest!

Yeah, that’s fair. I’m usually gentler with the newbies unless they exhibit assholism on a grand an obvious scale. This was more an instance of not understanding our rules well enough. And since they were new, they doubtless failed to see my little “example” for what it was. Shoulda oughta handled this one a little more gently.
