Atlanta Doper Lunch specifics

I’m in New York, we’re officially leaving from New Brunswick, NJ after I meet my friends there.

Mostly amused

Is this Atlanta Ga? Heck, why didn’t you guys say so? North Carolina is not that far away. Hmmmmm. I’ll have to talk to hubby first though, see if we are busy that weekend.

Yeah Friday is still on without any changes. Looks like 5-10 people. I have nothing else to add, mainly because I am trying in vain to be witty but not coming up with anything. I need to eat. Ugh.

Just another reminder to Atlanta Dopers that, in addition to tomorrow (Friday)'s lunch at Le Peep in Peachtree Center at noon, I am giving my tour of the Fox Theatre at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Show up at the Fox arcade at around ten to ten. It’s a fascinating 90 minutes, and only $5!

See y’all tomorrow regardless.

To bump this to the top I would like to say that I am still planning on being there today.

See y’all at Noon. I happen to also be wearing a green shirt today and black dockers.

Jeffery

And I appear to be wearing a white button-up shirt with narrow black stripes, and will have changed my long pants for blue shorts by the time I reach Le Peep. I am 5’7" and keep my head shaved. I have festering wounds on my face.

I don’t really have festering wounds on my face.

My real name is Glenn, but I also have real-life friends who call my Five, so I’ll answer to either.

I’ll be on the lookout for a table whereat two or more men in short-sleeved green shirts are seated.

We actually pulled this thing off.

Imagine asking the hostess at any resturant much less one downtown Atlanta about the Mullinator party.

We had a good group for lunch.

We had in attendance:

Mullinator (of course) - Dang boy why did you not tell you you were like 6’10", that piece of info for the description would have helped us spot you much more than I am wearing a green shirt, since everybody was wearing a green shirt. (I am glad he was not dressed up for the convention that Rosebud was here for, in a Klingon suit he would have been downright scarry.)

Five - He was easy to spot but unfortunately he was the last to arrive. The Sci-Fi Folks thought he looked like some guy on Babylon 5, since I am solely a Trek fan, I have no idea.

Rosebud - the one who started all this mess. She brought her friend Kathy. They drove all the way down from NY just to have lunch with us, well that and to attend some convention that was going on.

Kathy - Friend to Rosebud. She rode all the way to Atlanta to have lunch with a bunch of people she knows nothing about.

Xenophon41 - I did not really get to talk to him we had two separate tables with an aisle between us and he sat kind of far away, but he seemed to be having fun with Mullinator and the gals.

Mjollnir - He really drove all the way from Columbia SC just to have lunch with us. He sat at the same table I did so I got to talk to him the most. I still cannot believe that he drove all the way from SC just to have lunch with us.

StrTrkr777 - That’s me. I also brought a friend, Anthony. I am trying to convince Anthony to join in on the board, he seems interested. I hope he was not too bored.

Anthony - He tried to get a GD started. I told him where to find the website and to go to GD and not argue with David B. (It was a predestination vs. random event kind of topic).

Mullinator broke the ice by asking who had been on the board the longest. I asked did he mean the old AOL boards or the new Web based MB. Then everybody decided that I had been around the longest since I had been on the AOL boards and they had not.

We talked about Loverock and other things that have gone on in the past. Somethings had happened before some of the group had begun posting, but they knew of the general gist of it from other threads.

It is kind of hard to do much at lunch especially since Mully, Anthony and I had to go back to work and Rosebud and Kathy were heading back to the convention, but it was still a good lunch and I was glad to meet everyone who made it.

Sorry that Doctor Jackson could not make it. Also, sorry that TubaDiva did not make it. Extremely sorry that UncleBeer was not able to make it though no adult beverages were consumed so he might not have had that much fun.

We will have to do something later where we can spend more time talking and can mix and mingle.

Anyone else want to add to the topics of discussion, go right ahead.

Jeffery

Pretty good summary there StrTrkr. But, you forgot to mention how we all dazzled each other with sparkling personalities, witty repartee, and sly innuendo.

I loved getting to put faces with names and hang IRL with people I consider friends (and hopefully a couple of new recruits that seem like they would fit right in.) It would have been nice if it could have lasted longer, but those slavedrivers at work want me to do something for that salary they pay. Perish the thought.

Wally was talked about, trolls were mentioned and then forgotten, I was able to evoke the names of Coldfire and Eve. Definitely have to do this again.

And, note to other dopers, having a group seated as “The Mullinator Party” is likely to garner a few odd looks from restaurant hostesses.

Hey, next time a Sci-Fi convention is in town we have go to dress Mullinator up like some big killing machine and have him tell the hostess the Mullinator party is here.

Course, telling them anyone asking for the Straight Dope group does not get much better response.

Yes, I did indeed forget to mention the witty reparte and such.

We also talked about Handy, David B., CK, Melin, Quadell, and a few other posters.

It was funny people generally introduce themselves by name, but when Mjollnir told me his name I had no idea who he was, same with Mullinator or Xenophon. So I told me name, but I then told them StrTrkr so they would know who I was. It was kind of weird, but we had a great time.

I still cannot believe that Mjollnir actually go up this morning and got dressed and drove by himself all the way from SC (I know it is just a couple of hours or so, but still) just to have lunch with Atlanta Dopers. I tell you these guys can party.

Yeah, I know what you mean about companies expecting you to work for your money. Isn’t it enough that I show up at the building. Do I really have to work too?

We did not dabble in innuendo sly or otherwise in our group as we were all male (Mjollnir, Five, Anthony, and myself). But now if Tuba and some of the other females will come to the next shindig, I promise to use some sly innuendo (or maybe not if that helps you decide to come).

Also, Mullinator did not bring fluffinator so we did not get to meet her.

Great time was had by all.

Jeffery

That’s it, this fluffinator nonsense has got to stop. All nators were not created equal and all nators are not related. Or, to put it in the parlance of Sesame Street “One of these Nators is not like the other, one of these Nators just doesn’t belong.”

If my wife were to register, she would pick a much cooler name.

What did you guys DO downtown? I pulled off the interstate at International Blvd. with 20 minutes to spare. Then traffic came to a standstill. 15 minutes to go 1/2 mile to Peachtree Center Ave., where I find out that Peachtree St. is closed off. So is every road leading to Peachtree. Cops were everywhere, making a bigger mess of the traffic. They directed us down Peachtree Center, where every garage and parking lot was full - big surprise since that’s the only road that wasn’t closed.

The only ‘strange’ thing I noticed was a whole bunch of Salvation Army folks walking around. I figure they massed the forces to either 1) try to save your heathen souls; or 2) finally declare war on somebody. Maybe both.

If you didn’t want me there, just say so. Don’t take the whole city down in the process. My Zesto chili dog, eaten all alone, was lovely, thanks.

Doctor Jackson, I told ya to take MARTA…

Actually, it was even more surreal inside the food court adjacent to Le Peep. Klingons surrounded by Salvation Army types. One wondered which warriors would prevail. (The Klingons were outnumbered, and the S.A. people were scarier, but with superior weapons technology, who knows?)

Glad you enjoyed your chili dog.

I don’t have much to add. The other folks pretty much summed it up well.

But, I do have a correction on something I said earlier. The character in the B5 episode was not in the series finale “Sleeping in Light” (which is what I had said), but the Season 4 finale “Deconstruction of Falling Stars.”

And, as the only doper present who apparently never watched Babylon 5 I am once again left lookin silly while only able to utter a weak “Huh?” But, I do know the first names of former Cubs infielders Tinkers, Evers, and Chance. Ha!!!

Since no one brought a camera to record this event for posterior (see Raleigh gathering), I am planning to draw pictures of the various attendees with Microsoft Paint.

I’ll let y’all know how it turns out.

Mully say:

I never watched Babylon 5 either, but I get that “you look just like Garibaldi!” thing whenever I’m around other sci-fi geeks. Not just them, even: On the wall of my cube here at work is a TV Guide cover with B5 characters, including that one, on it. A secretary at work brought it to me, with a Post-It note on it with the caption, “It’s you!”

I just got home about an hour ago, and it took me forEVer to get on line-- wanted to thank Mullinator for setting our little gathering up, and to say that it was fun meeting you all and I’m sorry I couldn’t stay longer
