Big Lots is what used to be Pic’n’Save. Good prices on some things (a 1,134g – 2.5 pound – bag of Famous Amos cookies for three bucks, tuna for $0.49/can), but lots of inferior-quality stuff.
I’ll go Craftsman for anything that does not have an electric motor. All my wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, etc. are Craftsman (gotta love their replacement policy.) Years ago they changed makers of their electric motors and I’ve been quite unimpressed with the quality. I believe they buy their motors from the same company B&D/DeWalt does.
My uncle bought a very stout Craftsman screwdriver many years ago (this was related to me by my father). Somehow he managed to bend it. He was not at all happy. He marched into sears with a scowl on his face, and a salesman saw him coming. Quickly, the salesman grabbed an identical screwdriver from the rack and met my uncle half-way down the aisle. They exchanged screwdrivers, but not words. My uncle turned and left with his new screwdriver and the silent exchange was over. Good timing, and good customer service.
Oh, I got the coolest tools recently. I was in an antique shop and picked up an old Yankee ratchet screwdriver just like dad had. I was in Home Depot and picked up a small Stanley Yankee screwdriver. Works great!
I don’t know why, as a blue blooded gal, I clicked on this thread (maybe it was remnants of my post in the Tomboy Thread), but it certainly wasn’t what I was expecting.
And you’re not alone. My SO gets the Harbor Freight stuff in the mail all the time. He flips through it, oohs and ahs, and says “look at all these tools that I need!”
About 20 years ago while working in a tire repair shop I removed a Craftsman 3/8" combination wrench from some poor sucker’s steelbelted radial. He had run over the wrench and managed to get the open end of the wrench through the tire and left the box end sticking out. I tried putting a bar through the box end and pulling mightily but was unable to pull the wrench out. Ended up breaking the wrench in half (not an easy job, either) and removing it in pieces. Noticed it was a Craftsman, so the next time I was at Sears I turned it in and was given a new one, no questions asked. I think I still have that replacement in my toolbox.
