Well, since we seem to have morphed into Third World English teaching, I can offer this definitive account of what what can be expected of teaching English in Bangkok.
It’s written by Stickman, a Kiwi of my acquaintance who was an English teacher here for years, and not a dodgy one either. Fully qualified and with a good position at a prestigious school. He recently left teaching to pursue business interests. A genuinely nice guy and happily married (to a local, and no, not to a former student of his).
(In it, he mentions the average monthly income of Thais is 7000 baht, which is about US$209.)
In it, he mentions: “The bad thing about English teaching is that comparatively, it doesn’t pay that well, averaging at about 30,000 baht [US$896 at today’s exchange rate] per month - and far less for positions outside of Bangkok.”
Pretty much offensive to everyone. “Priced themselves out of the market”? What’s that all about? This more or less reads, “I’m tired of white bitches with standards not having any of my bullshit. That’s why I like the brown women. Treat 'em like dirt, they don’t know any better.”
