ATTN: SETI@home Straight Dopers

[whistles innocently]

Hey, everyone, check out the main SETI@home page–the User of the Day is our very own Triskadecamus!

(Of course, they really should have waited until this Thursday, but still, congrats, Triskadecamus!)

My IT guy said that he will be giving me Admin access to all the PC’s in my department!!!

That means 14 P4’s running SETI!!!

(Fingers Crossed!!!)

You know, I wanted to set mine up to run as a service but last time I tried to follow the links there to download the appropriate files it didn’t work. :frowning:

I took note of the name of the program from the SETI site and then Googled it.

Here is the working link.

I’ve been reading through this thread hoping to find a way to cut down on my processing time. I’m at an abysmal 40+ hours per unit.
I’ve read a few of you mention a commandline executable. Please pretend that I am 5 years old and have no clue what you’re talking about. How do I bring my unit time down to 3.5 hours like some of you are claiming to have?

Ok, I’ll try. I’ll assume that you use Windows.

Step 1. Download the command lin client here:
ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/setiathome/setiathome-3.03.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe

Step 2. Download SETI Driver here:
http://www.wakeassoc.com/setidriver/SETIDriver.zip

Step 3. Follow the instructions here:
http://www.wakeassoc.com/setidriver/first_run_instructions.htm

If that’s not enough, please ask again.

Fantastic, I will try it out today!

mkl12,
Thanks. It took awhile to get the entire thing set up and running. I think the problem was they weren’t both DLed to the same folder and so they couldn’t communicate with each other.
But I’ve solved the problem and it’s up and running now.

So I’m running it on the driver and…well, just curious, is this a one time thing I have to run it through there? What about the colors? The squiggly lines? The bar graphs? I want pictures, darnit!

No, it’s not a one time thing. If you want shorter times, you must live without the pictures. They make the screensaver version so slow.

I’ve got the driver running right now, great stuff mkl12, great stuff indeed. I wonder if it is worth my time to try more than one process at a time… I noticed 4 at high prioroty practically crashed my computer so that’s a no-go :stuck_out_tongue: Running one at normal priority so we’ll see how that works out. If it is around three hours I’ll push the bar up a notch and see if that helps anything… probably won’t, but who knows.

Also, I’ve signed up for another erislover account, so there’s two of me there now, but one with an account I actually have access to. I was thinkin’ this time and saved the password.

Go dopers!

If you are running the command line version, I recommend Seti Spy, as it monitors your client, and gives a graph of the results, even if it’s not quite as pretty as the screensaver version, but quite nice nonetheless. It gives you all kinds of nifty statistics and even a link to a sky picture of where your current work unit came from, and still goes screamin’ fast.

And he takes the lead!!!

Sorry, I never saw this thread until now. I’ve been looking for a good SETI@home group to join, so I joined. Didn’t mean to displace you Kwyjibo.

Woot! Finally got all my stuff here in San Diego, and even got net access this AM! I’m back!

Took me forever to get Seti@home to work with my new ISP, though… hehe…

Not a problem. At about 15 units per day, it won’t take me long to catch up.

:stuck_out_tongue:

A little late, but welcome to the group, rackman. (And to the SDMB!)

Just thought I’d jump in and say that The Straight Dopers and creaping closer to the alt.fan.cecil-adams!

TSD: 50947 units
A.B.C.A : 63617 units

Getting closer!!!

Coming soon, to a spot under the desk, next to my feet:
A new 3.0 GHz PC that should be good for whacking out units like mad. Supposedly, there’s a way to make SAH aware of hyperthreading, so the thing can do almost twice as many per day.
