ATTN: SETI@home Straight Dopers

When does the next incarnation of SETI come out?

Once again time for the weekly SETI update. I pulled these numbers today at about 4:30 MST (GMT-7), using the SETI Team program.

There are again several new members this week, and with their added contributions we processed 866 units this last week, but lost one member, so our total as of today is 24306 units. We are so close to the 25k mark!

As with last week, I’ve included the column that shows any change in overall ranking from last week. It shows a positive number for those who moved up a rank, a negative number for those who slipped down, NC for those who didn’t change, New for the members new this week, and Gone for our one lost member.

And also as with last week, most everyone slipped down a notch or two (I’m now 19th, damn it!), mostly because the new members plugged in close to the top. But we can use all of those units, so come on new members!

These are the standings as of 4:30 pm MST, shown in order of total units:

And by the way, Beelzebubba, what are you running on? 160 units in 7 days? Nice work!

Ok, my projection is for 24536 at year end, only two days away. Unless we get some more new members with a few hundred units, that looks like about where we’ll end up.

So keep it up everyone, and come on new folks!

Ugly

Wow!
From 18 units in a week to 40!!!

That does NOT suck!!!

It’s about 3:00 pm MST (GMT-7) and I just checked the totals using SETI Team. We currently have a total of 24564 units!

Way to go team!

Between now and midnight I expect we’ll pick up another 30 or so units, so we may break 24600. This is above my last estimate by about 60 units, so we did good.

Depending on where I am, I’ll try to pull the results between 11:00 pm and midnight. If any one else gets them and wants to post, go for it.

Way to go everybody, and let’s see how far we can go before they finish this project.

Ugly

We close out the year (well, in the Eastern Time Zone, anyway) with an official total of 24,624 units. Woo-hoo!

Of course, I am a little disappointed that none of you slackers has actually found an extraterrestrial civilization.

Well, I found something quite interesting, but the government told me I couldn’t…HEY!..WHO ARE YOU GUYS!!!..WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU"RE AAAAAGGGGGHHHHH!

Well, I got my predicted 36 units in just under the wire, but I’m a little annoyed because I should have just about squeezed out another unit before midnight, but had a computer problem that cost me several hours.

I’m basically computer-illiterate, so I don’t know if I screwed up somehow or not (feel free to tell me what I did wrong if it’s obvious to you smarter folks), but considering the circumstances I decided to share the info with y’all in case this happens to someone else.

My OS is WindowsXP (which came with the new computer). Yesterday morning I got notice from Microsoft that there were a couple of new updates that I really needed to download, so I did so, restarted, and went on about my business. Several hours later I took a break to play around with the 'puter and noticed that the little green alien guy wasn’t showing in the systray. I was annoyed at myself, thinking that for some reason Seti hadn’t started automatically and I’d failed to notice and restart it myself. However, when I tried to start it - no Seti!

No matter what method I tried to start it, or to open the program to see what was happening, I got zilch - although all of the icons, shortcuts, files, etc. were right where they were supposed to be, I couldn’t get any response at all. However, I could still open the little help folder and the uninstaller, so I decided that maybe the restart had messed something up (I hardly ever shut my computer down) and the best thing to do was uninstall Seti and re-load it afresh from the website.

After that, everything worked just fine and dandy for a couple of hours, until I needed to search for a document I was working on. After locating it, I clicked on the ‘x’ to close the search window - and when it closed Seti also shut down! Same situation as before - although I could see the files and stuff, my computer pretended they didn’t exist.

Since I basically don’t have a clue about computers, I guessed that maybe there was a problem with the newly-installed updates and, being too ignorant to tinker around with my 'puter’s ‘brains’, I used the restore function to reset everything to the day before. Restarted and bang! - the Seti program kicked in like it was supposed to and has been running like a champ ever since.

Needless to say, I haven’t re-installed the updates, although I’m not sure they were the problem. They didn’t seem to be terribly important - no security patches or anything - so I’m happy without them, but I thought I’d share this in case someone else encountered the same problem (especially if they happen to be a computer dunce like me).

Of course, if I did something wrong or failed to do something I should have done, I’d love to know about it so it won’t happen again. Please feel free to share any ideas or suggestions you smarter folks might have - and if it appears that the updates were the problem, should I report this to Microsoft or the Seti folks?

I don’t know about that - I’ve been staring slack-jawed at Beelzebubba’s 160-unit-in-one-week total and wondering . . . maybe we have found the alien, and he is us? <said while eyeing Beelzebubba suspiciously>

I’ve always suspected that the aliens were already here, laughing their asses off at the silly Terrans . . .

Well, I see I’ve been bumped from 5th place.

But I’ll always be the Leader!

Now now now! No fighting amungst the ranks!

:stuck_out_tongue:

And alt.fan.cecil-adams is still ahead at 50966 work units…

:: d & r at 486 speed ::

And we are over half way there in much less than half the time. :stuck_out_tongue:

I have added myself and transfered credits to stright dopers
@-)

Hah! Another victory for the glorious forces of the true Straight Dope SETI@home group!

Welcome aboard, white-tigeress.

Time to head on into a.f.c-a for a friendly little taunt, me’sa thinks.

i question the genuine ness of the planetary society
i also question their intelligence

i’ve telepathed with several alien species
many many have visited urth as has been well documented
to think they’d be using radio waves or light signals is to have completely misjudged and insulted intelligent life…
if they can go light years in space craft, they’d be doing such things?
clearly not…
they’ve given the us actual alien space craft
that can defy logic as well as the ‘laws of nature’ as taught in skool
they exist at nellis afb in nevada…

if you’d like REAL, ACTUAL alien contact, let’s do an experiment
almost every clear night some signal me
they do funny, unnatural, weird things to starlight
stars appear to move, flash, and change color
not as in natural atmospheric caused sparkling

it is clearly a supernatural event to all the open minded peepl i’ve pointed it out to
peepl say things like, “stars aren’t supposed to do that…”

the planetary society duz not even answer a letter telling them i would willingly show them these things for free with zero effort on their part
so, i say, they are not REALLY serious

why waste all that effort when ultimately easier methods are much more successful?

peepl don’t realize how much more ‘advanced’ many of these species are

if anyone here would like to see the phenomena, i’m in los angeles
anyone within a few time zones should be able to see wut i’m talking about
contact me, we’ll set a time

or you could continue the present methods which have netted exactly wut?
Nuthing Atoll ?
duzn’t it get kinda intellectually boring living on Nothing Atoll???
discom8bob@yahoo.com

Uh huh…

a reply from poultry?

you DESERVE the planetary society…

Hey, SETI sent me a certificate in honor of my 100 unit milestone - cool! Do they do that for any other ‘milestones’ ?

Not a big deal, I know, but I wasn’t expecting it and it was a pleasant surprise.

I got them at:

100
250
500
750
1,000 and
2,500.

What certificate? WHAT CERTIFICATE??

My teeny weeny hamsters have worked themselves to the bone for my 3115 units and I never got a certificate.
I bet they got the address wrong. I bet they sent it to:

brachyrhynchos
NJ, USA, Urth.
