Not a fan of the round avatars or the blue notification #s. Or the dim search and hamburger icons, for that matter. Straight Dope Light here, always and forever.
It’s weird that I’m seeing all these one and two day old posts about this change, but I didn’t notice anything different until this morning. Maybe I had the old CSS cached and it just now refreshed. Anyway, count me in with the “put it back the way it was” group.
I think I did also at first.
Who maintains our SDMB custom themes, anyway? Should we specifically message anyone (the mod team? a particular person?) to make them aware of this?
Presumably they’re just out enjoying their weekends (imagine that) and will see this thread later in the week?
I’m seeing circles on mobile with the regular classic theme.
I have some time, so I’ll look into making them square in my tweak script.
In the SD light and dark custom themes, it’s implemented as:
img.avatar {
border-radius: 0;
}
Where is this tweak script, btw? Is that something available to the rest of us?
yeah, finding the CSS that did it wasn’t hard, but it still seems to be set to 50% (i.e. a full circle) even on Straight Dope Light for me, so I just changed it for all themes. There’s a toggle in the Interface settings to turn it back on (the same Interface settings for the board as a whole, where you set your theme).
And yes, it’s available. I’ll look into fixing the notification color also, but I’ll release just this one. I’ll post a new link I guess.
I’ve not updated the description yet. And you need to install TamperMonkey for your browser to get it to work:
Click you browser name and then scroll down to find the link to the store page. Or just look up “Tampermonkey” in your browser’s extension store.
I also just noticed another error they will helpfully fix. The “It’s taking longer than we thought” is just plain text that looks bad.
We have another thread about that: Defective top chrome tagline starting 2025-05-09
The entire SD Light Theme is currently broken, so none of its customizations are currently working.
Great, thank you!
While we’re here, could you do me a favor and reply back again, as a quick way to show the (wrong colored) reply notification on the upper right badge. I’ll use it for testing.
Anyone have a pic of what this used to look like? I thought it was just the color of the SD logo, but that doesn’t look right.
As I guess nobody has, I’ll do it.
Thank you very much Bullet did it in another thread, but I clicked on it and lost it, so yours helped.
I’ve updated the script linked above to fix the tagline and the notification badge. It should automatically update soon, to version 3.4.0, or you can install it again to force an update.
No longer needed. I found the Straight Dope Dark theme still had the right one.
Glad to help. I won’t bother with the scrip, though. I can see why others are bothered by these changes, but they’re not actually bothering me.
That one part didn’t bother me much, but cutting off people’s avatars and the tag line just looking broken bugged me enough. And I figured I might as well fix the badge color, too.
Plus, once you’ve already tweaked other things, adding in one more has less friction than creating the whole thing.
BTW, if you want to just restore the SD Light Theme in its entirety, all its (working) styles were here.
I found I really did not like SD Dark. Waay too contrasty and eye-strainy.
So I switched to Discourse Classic.
It looks very little like vBulletin used to. But now 5 years after the switch to Discourse, I really don’t care what vBulletin looked like. When I visit other vBulletin-based boards I find the look & feel positively antiquated.
My expectation is that Discourse Classic is used throughout Discourse, not just here in our trivial corner of their vast universe. As such it’ll be a) stable, b) adequately QC-ed & tested before a change is released, and c) quickly fixed if broken.
My advice: If anyone here is struggling with finding a no-hassle theme, try that one.
I mean, I could I guess, but I would need to do some extra manipulations to inject it at the right time and/or remove the other one to make sure it overrode the other options (and could cause those annoying flashes of repainted content). Right now I override individual components when the page loads, before content it painted.
I maybe can tackle other bits if there are ones people care about.

Y’all should switch to Straightdope Dark theme. Bright white magnifying glass and hamburger icons, and square avatars!
Now the Straight Dope Dark theme has been roundified, with round avatars and dimmed-out search and hamburger icons
