Average looking redheads?

I never realized Lawrence Kansas was so close to the ocean!

I am another average looking redhead. At least I hope I’m average as opposed to ugly, but I am definitely not drop dead gorgeous. I am not going to post pictures so you’ll have to take my word for it. My sister and niece are cute but I wouldn’t say they were DDG either.

I think some of you have lost your minds. I am very average, crooked teeth, crooked smile, great big nose, hardly symmetrical… not a hound dog, no, but certainly very average. Though I think you are kind to say otherwise, but you flatter me.

Above average? THIS is above average. swoon!

Ahem. If you don’t mind my saying so, I’ve not seen someone (like, an actual, real-life someone) who makes my little heart go pitter-pat like in quite some time. You’re lovely

thankyou -
(and that was a lousy pic of me - but it showed off my redhair very well)

“Provocatively Dressed” does not equal “Beautiful.”

Natural redhead here with brown eyes, pretty rare. Average to butt-ugly, but young for fifty.
Watch ’em come and watch ’em go
With only one thing in common

Folklore about redheads is true.

I’m sorry, but you are ~so~ much more attractive than that woman, whoever she is. It’s not even close. Now, just to show you I’m not full of it, this redhead is more attractive than you. But I’m not really sure of whether or not she’s a natural.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you

My BF thinks she is so hot and I just dont see it.

Now, Scarlett Johansson is quite another category of creature - she’s more than just above average, that woman is ethereal.

[SUB]And though I personally don’t see it, I thank you for the compliment. I think Marcia Cross (the image I linked to) is ga-ga-gorgeous. But I’m blushing to my roots. [/SUB]

I’ve wondered about this for a long time: Do redheads not have to have as pretty faces to be considered attractive?

I honestly think this is the case. If Laura Prepon was a blonde or brunette, people wouldn’t think she was “pretty.” (I say people, because I personally find her homely) Lauren Ambrose wouldn’t be considered much above average if she had a different hair color either.

Perhaps it’s some sort of miswiring in people’s brains that do not let them see redheads with the normal clarity they see other people. A throw-back to when you used to be entranced by shiny objects as baby? Who knows.

All I know for sure is the gap between what I see in the mirror, and guys’ stares/women’s catty remarks makes me think a lot of people are loopy. I consider myself an average-looking redhead anyway. (I hate having pictures taken, so I don’t have a current one, sorry.) My mom’s an average one too.

Oh, and brightpenny, just last month I finally saw the second brown-eyed redhead I’ve ever encounted: a little boy in the supermarket. You guys really are rare!

Actually, I’ve wondered that myself, elfkin, like I said - my face? Ugh. I always told my husband if I shaved my head bald I’d be so homely (this amuses him to no end and he thinks it would be “cute” - maybe, but not attractive!)

Anyway, I quoted the above line of text because of this - she’s been getting a lot of attention since she did this about (what was it? a year ago? two years? can’t remember). She’s said in interviews that she’s stunned by how much more attention the colour change has gotten her. Although, some of us, myself included, like Conan O’Brien, bemoan the change, and wish she would go back to red. :frowning:

I never said she was beautiful. The linked photos were in response to the suggestion that she is “average”.
The manner of provocative dress in those photos isn’t something an average person really would wear very well.

Still, I did not say she was beautiful, although I will say so now.

Most redheads are pretty damn ugly…

It’s the rare auburn who can pull it off.

And don’t talk to me about Tom Cruise’s exwife, she’s the postergirl for redheaded ugly.

Sheesh I’m sorry everybody… what a jerky pair of posts… I didn’t mean to insult anybody.

If I can rephrase:

I personally find the hunter orange hair + ultra pale skin + gazillion freckles to be exactly not what I’m looking for… Most people find find Carrot Top in a different class than Brad Pitt.

Some of us can proudly pull off the middle ground quite well, thank you very much!

Obligigatory pic

I will agree, though, that among actors there does seem to be a tendency to be at one of the extremes.

I played along in fun, but there is something that concerns me at the heart of the thread.

Redheads are different. We get noticed, commented upon, watched because we’re different. Those of us who are carrot-tops are teased mercilessly as children (I’m auburn and I was teased too), as teens (especially in California) we struggle to get tan like the other kids, to fit in with the blonde barbie/ken ideal. Fair, translucent skin does not camouflage figure flaws.

When we walk down the street and encounter another redhead, there’s a brief moment when our eyes meet, a flickr of recognition of sameness, a secret society of differentness.

We’re much more sensitive physically. Our skin is easily irritated, we’re more likely to have adverse reactions to medication (yes, in England they used to have “redhead wards” kept closer to the nurses station), and tend to be allergic. As atopes, we’re more likely to be of above-average intelligence. Many of us are highly intuitive. Sensitivity has many forms.

Some people find us ugly because of narrow cultural preferences. Some people are drawn to us out of curiosity. Some have discovered that a sensitive lover is a good thing.

Some people seek out uniqueness, and appreciate beauty that is outside the boundaries of conventional hotness. I love my auburn hair, my brightpenny hair. It marks me and has helped shape me to celebrate my uniqueness in other ways as well.

ok, first thing i need to say is there is a difference between artificial and natural beauty, and yours is natural, whereas the other two make use of cunning artifice. when you compare yourself to them you are not comparing like for like. just think how you would look with a battallion of make up artists at your beck and call… and how they would look at the end of a days work on a normal job…
second thing is… if only i was twenty years younger…

Yep. Tho’ the more well-heeled of us were at the Marriott. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to go again next year; Boston was great.

Yep. If ya don’t wanna see pictures of readheads, don’t open a redhead thread. We always do this.

Why? Because of what brightpenny says:

Most redheads gets lots and lots o’shit growing up. Being a redhead as a kid meant you were a freak. It’s great to grow up and find your red hair suddenly makes you attractive to many. But not all. This is a common attitude:

Yeah, everyone has preferences but it’s frustrating when your appearence falls outside of society’s norm.

But enough whining about a very, very minor issue. At least I’m not a Brazilian child prostitue with AIDS…
