I was having a conversation at work last week and we were discussing the Food Network’s “Best Thing I ever Ate” show and someone mentioned Bacon Brownies.
I found a couple of recipes and it seems that all they were doing was adding bacon between two pours of the batter.
So I made a batch using the scratch brownie recipe from Cooks Illustrated.
I poured half the batter and layered my cooked bacon on top, then added the rest of the batter. Baked at 325 for about 28 minutes.
They are good, but not as bacony as I’d hoped.
Anyone ever tried making these? Any ideas on how to get more bacon flavor to come through? I’m thinking of substituting some bacon grease for some of the butter.
Have you ever tried it? 'Cause I was pretty dubious at first, as well. I was very surprised at how well the two go together. I found a bacon chocolate bar at Whole Paycheck a while back, and my world, it was rocked.
I’ll have to give bacon brownies a shot- hadn’t thought of doing that.
I too am dubious - and I think I’m going to remain so. I suppose if there were some on hand I’d give 'em a try, but I definitely would not risk ruining good brownies by trying it.
I’ve made bacon chocolate chip cookies that turned out acceptable, albeit a little salty. For more bacon flavor, you might try crumbling it into the batter, rather than inserting it as strips.
The batch I brought to work yesterday went pretty well. Only two persons decided they didn’t want to try them and all the others thought they were pretty good. Not “the best thing I ever ate” though.
