I was going through and reading some of the Agony Booth’s bad movie reviews. Jabootu is also an old friend . Anyone else enjoy this? Sometime it’s just fun, and takes less time and les pain than watching the movies.
One caveat about the Agony Booth: they’re not nearly as smart as they think they are, and some of the movies they mock are actually pretty good, just cheap. Night of the Lepus, for example, is actually a pretty good B-movie. It didn’t have much budget, and it inspires giggles (giant killer… rabbits) instead of shrieks of terror. Still, it gets going, has an entertaining script, both the military and the main characters are actually pretty competent, and is well-acted overall. I’ve also tended to notice that several reviewers have no idea what they’re talking about in some sections, and frequently criticize aspects that the movie got perfectly right.
Jabootu’s reviews of Battlefield Earth are classic, as are their analysis of the Jaws films (showing how they deteriorated and speculated why sequels keep getting worse and worse). I’m sorry they’re inactive now (last review was February 2009). But they tended to avoid the know-it-all snarkiness that you sometimes find on these sites.
I don’t read them too much any more, and my blog is about good movies, not bad ones.
For years now, every couple of months I’d hit my Jabootu bookmark, never really expecting to see another update. After all, the most recent one on there is from 2005 – I’d just assumed they’d all given up and moved on with their lives.
Turns out I’d just bookmarked the wrong spot on their site. Go figure…
On the whole Jabootu thing - for whatever reason, that guy makes god-awful websites. I don’t want hate on him, but he can’t put a website together, period. It makes looking for what you want a huge pain. It was months before I realized he had moved to a new site, for instance, and once there the functiond don’t work as advertised.
