Hey MattK where in Oakland did you venture? Having newly moved here, I look to tourists to tell me what’s fun here to see…
And in San Francisco, …five people shot and stabbed at 22nd and Mission…a cable car on the California line snapped…funstuff! You picked a good day to go to Oakland.
We should all probably e-mail Kyla just to make sure she isn’t still under the impression that this was last week.
Nah, I think she saw us making fun of her earlier in the thread. (Right Kyla?)
For anyone driving, I seem to remember there are a couple parking garages in the area within a couple of blocks. One of which is I think a Holiday Inn (perhaps a Quality Inn – there’s a store called “Video Only” and the hotel sorta surrounds it and you drive into the garage under the store. VERY ODD!)
For anyone coming via BART who’s unfamiliar with the area, I’d say the most hassle-free way to get there would be to get off at the Montgomery station and take the Geary bus to the corner of Van Ness and Geary. (It’ll let you off kitty-corner/catty-corner/kitter-corner* to the restaurant.) If you want to save a buck you can get off at the Civic Center station but it’s sort of a hike and a pretty crummy area (although it should be fine during the day.)
*I think I covered all the regional variations?
I haven’t been in Oakland after all. Switched plans and went to Palo Alto/Stanford/Menlo Park. It’s an impressive campus.
Sassy recommended going to Oakland on Monday.
Well, see you all in a couple hours. I guess I’ll recognize you all. I am wearing a dark blue shirt and jeans.
I can’t make it, for the same reason I couldn’t make it earlier in the thread. I still can’t wear my contacts for more than a few hours before they start irritating me. Grrr.
Sorry to have missed you, Matt. I hope you have a good time - if you are thinking of coming to the North Bay and doing some wine tasting or whatever, drop me an email. Hopefully my eyes will be all better soon.
Due to jetlag and illness, i could not attend either. sorry. (but at least the airline found my luggage!)
Another no-show here. I thought I would be in SF today, but life didn’t work out that way. I hope y’all had a good time.
What did y’all do after I left? Was it fun?
We went to the Maritime Museum and then to Ghiridilli Square (sp) for a few shockingly overpriced chocolate items, which we ate/drank amid shockingly brazen pigeons and a shockingly bad saxaphonist playing to an actual (predominately Sinatra-based) Muzak-style tape in a boombox. We split up after that (I believe Sassy and Sal took Matt & Simon to the 30 Stockton line, not sure what else they might’ve done on the way.) I had dinner with my husband out in the Richmond and caught the late show of Spiderman at the Alexandria, which was pretty good for about the first two thirds, then it sorta just got all dumb and fell apart. (And the company that just bought out United Artist’s must have a serious advertising jones: there were at least a half hour of ads and trailers on that thing!)
Good to meet “dopers” from other lands and enjoyed talking to everyone.
We ate at the best restaurant in the Wharf. It was really good.
Thanks, Sassy!
I did go to a few other places besides SF, since I had seen most of the typical sights in the first few days. Namely, the other places were Palo Alto/Stanford, Menlo Park, Oakland, Berkeley & campus and Santa Cruz. We stayed in Santa Cruz for the night, we found a nice motel that was only $35. Were there no surfers or did we look in the wrong spot? We went along the beach at the boardwalk.
Oh I posted a few pictures at http://krammel.de/sfdope/
I’m … I’m GORGEOUS!
Much better than Snoooopy’s camera.
That reminds me, Snooop, I forgot to give you your birthday present. You could’ve used it on your date!
Was it a bottle of pheromones? A copy of “How to Score With Chicks”?
