Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux and Randy Johnson all bore a close resemblence to Tommy Lasorda pitching batting practice.
Whoda thunkit?

Pitchers get old suddenly - they can go from All-Star caliber to washout in a year. Maddux started to look done last year, but that may be because he’s getting a standard-width strike zone these days.
Or maybe it’s just April weather and they have trouble getting loose.
Another star who fell (in a different way, of course) was Derek Jeter. And of course, he was the lynchpin of my fantasy team…

2 to 4 months.
Ouch.
[sub]Who cares though, I’m a Mets fan[/sub]
As I said in another thread, the Yankees won’t miss Jeter as much as you might think. Despite his fame and fortune, he really wasn’t one of their four best players, and he’s been declining quite a bit the last two years. He’s a good hitter, but they still have perhaps the AL’s best offense, and he’s a poor defensive shortstop. The Yankees have lots of lumber and they aren’t losing anything with the leather. They’ll be fine.
However, the D-Backs and Braves are seriously screwed if Johnson and Maddux have become old this year.
I saw the Yankee’s opener last night, including Derek Jeeter’s collision at home plate. Ouch.
When I saw this thread, my first thought was that the collision must have been even worse than it looked.
Especially considering that Hampton and Byrd are on the DL for a while.
Keep in mind that it’s only one game so far. You can’t judge an entire season on how the pitchers performed yesterday.
Unless you’re a New York fan, you guys are toast;)
It’s not like Johnson IMPLODED, fer cryin’ out loud. He gave up three earned runs (and two unearned) in 6 2/3 innings. I wouldn’t call that necessarily a bad outing - except that Hideo Nomo had a sensational one.
I saw Johnson give up five earned runs in the first inning on Father’s Day a few years back. Trust me, when he implodes, you know it. It’s always a bad sign when his first pitch goes sailing out of the park.
Yes, along with the rest of my pitching staff…
Now, why wasn’t Jimmy Haynes on the DL again?
