I don’t know what to think of this trade. Pudge isn’t what he was, of course, but he’ll hit more than Jose Molina. And now the Tigers will fill his spot in the lineup with more of Brandon Inge, who is a black hole of suck. But Farnsworth really isn’t as bad as his New York press would suggest, and in Detroit he might even be able to close.
Inge isn’t that bad. He has a high walk rate and decent power. For the position he is maybe slightly below avearage, and not a big step down from the current version of Pudge. Still I would think that you would want more then just Farnsworth.
Pudge was getting worse. His .290 average is empty with no walks to speak of (19 all year long). Inge has roughly the same stats for a whole lot less.
The Tigers are also looking at LaTroy Hawkins and Eddie Guardado.
By the way, this was from out of the blue to us as well. Honestly, I like the move.
Also, I don’t think it’s a white flag, but it’s a danger sign. I don’t think the Tigers have it to make a run in the postseason this year unless they flip a switch and they start crushing the ball like they should.
Other Tigers that I’m open to deal: Magglio Ordonez.
What I want: Roy Halladay.
Did the Yankees need Pudge? It almost seems like a luxury pick. Also, Farnsworth doesn’t sound very happy to be traded. Here’s to hoping he won’t be a malcontent.
I didn’t see tonight’s STL-ATL game, but according to the wrap-up, Carp was decent for 4 innnings. One run on five hits and two walks, two Ks. He didn’t mow 'em down, but for his first game after elbow surgery, not bad.
The Cards have about 24 hours to make a deadline deal. I’m thinking they’re not going to do anything this year. Mozeliak has been saying that getting Carpenter back was like making a deadline deal, a sentiment not shared by the rest of the organization, according to the Post-Dispatch. But, it just doens’t sound like the front office is itching for a trade.
Rumors are swirling around Manny Ramirez and a 3 way deal with the Pirates and Marlins. The big names would be OF Jason Bay of Pittsburgh going to Boston, a Pitt. LH veteran reliever, Florida OF Jeremy Hermedia, and several prospects whose names have not been divulged and are apparently still being tossed back and forth.
The D-backs play the Dodgers in a very crucial 4 game series. Here is a great chance for the D-backs to finally begin to distance themselves from the Dodgers by taking 3 out of 4.
Pudge is still a big offensive upgrade over Molina. I agree that Detroit could spare him, but it is a big help to the Yankees. (more in 4)
Hawkins is an Astro after last night the Yanks sent some cash and got back a 22 year 2b from Single A (Sally league)
Every Yankee fan I have talked to loved this deal.
This was a good move the Yanks, Molina actually even sounded a little overwhelmed by having the starting duties in an interview from last week. No Yankee fan trusts Farnworth despite him having a great year. He is still known for being bad in the big games and the postseason. We traded him at his maximum value. He probably won’t be a malcontent, especially as Detroit still has a chance to make the postseason and he might get a chance to close. Most importantly, this is a 2* month rental for both teams.
Jim
Well hopefully a 3 month rental including October.
I saw the game and Carp looked decent for not having pitched in the bigs for over a year with just two rehab starts. Now we have to see if he comes up with any soreness over the next couple days.
The last word on Mulder is that he is just “resting” for the time being, no rehab for the time being.
On a sad note, I got a call last night from one of my Cubbies friends gloating over their dominance of the Brewers. If the Cubs actually do win it all, it’s going to be a long year for me.
The Dodgers and D-backs have both had good runs of late, but against crappy teams. This series will be telling, that’s for sure.
I’m going to enjoy the Dodgers actually being over .500 for a minute before I get too concerned about the outcome of this series. I will be at the game tonight and thinking of you fondly, dalej42.
The Mets appear poised to let the trading deadline slink by while boldly doing jack-all nothing. If the Marlins or the Phillies get Manny Ramirez, and the Mets decide to rely on Ryan Church as their “deadline acquisition,” they’re going to struggle mightily to make the playoffs.
ESPN radio this morning says that a deal is in the works to send Ken Griffey Jr. to the Chicago White Sox. The deal is done, all Griffey has to do is agree.
Is there something in particular you want the Mets to do? There are limited options available, and the Mets don’t have much in major league ready talent to offer. Besides as the Pudge deal shows there isn’t always rumors before a deal goes though. Minaya has a history of getting things done late in the game.
Personally, I think the Mets have enough talent to win regardless as to what they do, but certainly some bullpen or outfield help would be nice. The one guy who I’ve heard most, Ibanez, I absolutely don’t want. He is brutal defensive outfielder, which is okay if you hit like Manny or Bonds, but not if you are merely a league average hitter.
I’d like to see them add a bat. Figuring that they’ll be fine if they stand pat, I think, is basically assuming that: (1) Fernando Tatis is going to continue to OPS+ 134; (2) Ryan Church is going to provide a meaningful contribution; and (3) Carlos Delgado will keep hitting as he’s been hitting for the last month for the next two months. I can’t be alone in thinking those are three dicey propositions.
If Tatis’ almost-surely-outlying performance normalizes, Delgado slips even a little, and Church can’t make it back, the Mets are left with a lineup in which only three players - Wright, Reyes, and Beltran - are top quality producers, and four positions (2B, C, LF, RF) are offensive black holes. I don’t think they can compete with either the Phillies or the Marlins of one of those teams adds Manny Ramirez; Manny Being Manny would give the Marlins three regular contributors with OPS+ above 140; the Mets don’t currently have any, and only one of their regulars (Matt Treanor, the catcher) is a real offensive liability.
So yes, there is something I’d like to see them do. Get into the Jason Bay conversation. Get into the Adam Dunn conversation. Get a bat. Preferably, do what the Yankees did and get a bat and a relief pitcher in one fell swoop, while parting with one top prospect and three mid-level players.
The Mets starting pitching is much better then either of those two teams. The Phillies have two reliable starters and one of them is 45. The Marlins don’t even have that. Of course, I recoginize your concerns, and another bat would certainly be nice. I thought Blake would have been a nice fit, but no one can prevent the Dodgers from blocking Laroche.
The problem is the Mets went all out to get Santana. I agreed with the move then, and I agree with it now, but it leaves the Mets without many top prospects, and all of those top prospects are far from the majors. They don’t, for example, have a player like Hermida to offer the Pirates. I just don’t see how they can beat out teams like the Rays and Marlins if those guys are determined to get a Dunn or Bay.
I heard about it this morning, but I didn’t think anything about it. I thought it would’ve fallen through like in 2005.
I don’t know what to think of this. Griffey isn’t the caliber of player he used to be. Konerko could just be having an off year (or two). I definitely would have wanted Adam Dunn or, should I say it, Manny? At least the trade wasn’t too costly. I like Nick Masset, though I don’t know anything about Richar. The Sox need more variety in the bull pen. They all throw heat and almost equally hot cutter.
I think I’m psyched. I was a huge Griffey fan in the 90’s, but it looks like his time has passed. Does he want a World Series? If so, hopefully, he can resume his 90’s form. But, it’s tough to beat age.
A 38 year old centerfielder who can no longer play center field due to the injuries his legs have sustained over the years. They won’t put him in right or left, we’ve got top notch talent there already, and he won’t DH because as good as he is, he’s not Jim Thome. Looks like they’re just scrounging up some left handed hitting for the bench. Methinks that we won’t see too much of Junior for the rest of the season. He’s just cashing in and hoping for a ring. That sounds harsher than I mean it, I have no problem with that idea, but the idea that he can contribute effectively on the defense in centerfield is silly.
I choose to interpret the Cubs’ dominance of the Brewers as a good thing. I’m still hoping for a Cards-Cubs series in the playoffs, and either of those two teams winning the pennant this year would make a better baseball story than Milwaukee winning it.
The Brewers have never won a world series, have only won the pennant once, and haven’t been in the playoffs in what 25 years? That is a better story to me then the Cardinals over achieving again.
