Baseball Thread July 2008

The only reason I watched the Jays tonight was because Roy Halladay was pitching. He won, God bless him. He’s 10-6 and would be about 13-3 with a team that can actually play.

If the Baltimore Orioles want Eckstein, I’d gladly trade him for some soft-shell crab and The Wire on DVD.

My family (but not me) is taking a trip to NYC soon and will be there over the all star break. Tickets to the actual game are absurdly priced. They will probably be going though to the All Star Futures game - will it be worth seeing?

What is this? Randy Johnson pitching a good game? D-backs actually in the lead? 10 Ks for Randy already today.

Anyone voting in the Final Vote for the All Star game? I’m voting Evan Longoria and Corey Hart. Anyone but Wright and Giambi.

Reds sweep the Nats and climb into 4th place!

Better watch out ChCubs!

Ok, not really, I’m actually more afraid of being swept at Wrigley and sliding back down into last place…

ESPN is reporting Sabathia to the Brewers is done. Can we get a year moratorium on the small markets can’t compete argument?

Fuck. I hate baseball

The Brewers? Nooooooooooo!
Dammit!

Why? Trades have always been part of the game. CC went to the Brewers not one of the big market teams, so why the hate?

Sorry, those were unrelated statements. The latter was directly after listening to Jayson Werth game tieing home-run when the Mets were 1 strike away from taking the first 2 of 3 from the Phillies.

Luckily we were redeemed by Fernando Tatis. What an odd game.

 Gotcha, now it makes more sense.

Well, I don’t hate baseball like Hawkeyeop, but I do agree with the “fuck” sentiment.

Fuck :frowning:

Good to see the Brewers making a move after all these years of dumping any player who looked to be promising. The test will be resigning him. Might just be a rental.

Still, their relief pitching is what’s going to kill them.

I think almost everyone believe this is a roll the dice and hope for the best deal where they have no serious plans to resign him. The Brewers have not seen the playoffs since 1982 I think. They think they can either overtake the Cubs or at least get the Wildcard. I think it was a worthwhile gamble and more power to them.

Cleveland in the meantime got themselves a future high DH and ???. So I guess we have to wait and see if what they got was really worth it. I saw that several other players are also on the block. Look for more trades for AAA guys this month.
The Yanks won a fun one over the Red Sox last night. A game winning hit by the rookie. It is reported that Jeter tied a string to Brett Gardner after the game so he would not float away as he was riding so high.

Jim

No fun at all.

The only solace here is that these all these in-division losses to their rivals, Rays and Yanks, have mostly been close affairs, a run or two, and the games themselves have been exciting to watch. The solace in the close losses has to do with the losses, apart from what damage they do the Sox’ W-L record, of course, are not dispositive. They’re mostly luck, and last night’s squibber banging off the shortstop’s glove, is a perfect example. The Sox aren’t playing poorly, they’re “just” losing.

That would have been a sweet one to win, tho, I admit.

Yes, I love the signing. Finally, they make a move that will have serious implications down the stretch, much like the move they made in '82 for Sutton that pushed them over the edge. They ended up loosing the WS in 7, but at least they were there.

I wouldn’t worry about the relief pitching at this point. Gagne’s back, (I know, big deal, but he’s still an arm), one of the starters will be in the pen now with CC aboard (Suppan, I hope, but they won’t want his contract grabbing pine so it’ll be McClung). They will have three back of the rotation starters in the pen for long/middle relief in McClung, Villanueva, and Shouse (who isn’t a starter but pitches like one).
Gagne and Torres can setup/close games out depending on rest and other factors. We should be good to go!
Imagine if Gallardo hadn’t gone down. CC, Sheets, Gallardo and Para. Then you’ve got Suppan/Busch/McClung as the Fifth. That would have been an Unbeatable rotation.

The other thing to note is that with this rotation (CC, and Sheets can go 8+ regular) you’ve got guys that will give the pen a rest and then those guys should be on top when they’re called upon.

Well, well, well. Lookie what team still tops the NL Central. And two of three from the hated Cards over the weekend, to boot.

Can’t wait for August when they finally swoon. :stuck_out_tongue:

The Tigers won in 15 innings. That’s what happens when you trot out your entire bullpen and send your backup catcher to pitch.

The Crew clearly have a schedule advantage down the stretch. Not that it automatically means more wins or a division title but my money would be on the Brewers to take the division. They play the Cubs 7 times at Miller Park (Wrigley North) and only 3 times down there. Plus the Brewers have more home games left on the schedule and are already breathing down the necks of the Cubs as we speak and *before * CC has pitched a game for us.

I love our chances!

It’ll still come down to the last week of the season. Hint: Check the schedule.
