Baseball Thread July 2008

I love these rounds up RickJay. Great Job.

Zito and Dontrell need to be seriously considered for this honor. Did I miss any?

What on earth are the Chicago White Sox wearing tonight? They should have brought back the shorts and collared shirts!

The Padres can get away with wearing camo uniforms. The team colors are close enough.

Ugh, enough with the phony patriotism.

And get rid of God Bless America!

Jones is back, strikes out 4 times, and we win because Nomar is producing along with Martin and Ethier. LaRoche is back as well, so we are only Furcal and Penny away from the World Series.

(I BELIEVE!)

I don’t think the Indians should let CC go. We haven’t had Cy-Young-Caliber pitching since the 90s. I think this is Byrd’s last year and we need our “promised” veteran (CC) to actually become our veteran.

I don’t know what the deal was with injuries this year. Everyone sucked before our Disabled List got long, so I don’t think injuries are really hurting us.

Choo is doing a great job now and so is Peralta, but no one is consistent. Jamie Carroll has been on-and-off hot as well.

We really killed ourselves doing so poorly in interleague play. I just don’t think that it’s time to “rebuild.” I don’t believe this team has bad players. There’s something wrong with their mentality. Every player, even my man Asdrubal, has a lot of potential. We need to take the bull by the horns and work through this abysmal season and come out strong next year.

It sucks that Omar Visquel is pretty much dead weight in the lineup anymore. He’s still Omar on the field but hit bat is gone (due to bad knees). It’d just be great to have another fan favorite to give us a little spark next year, like we had with Trot Nixon and Kenny Lofton last year, and Eddie Murray before that.

We’re facing Tampa Bay this week for the first time of the season (first of two series). I’m sure they’ll roll over us. I’d like to see them win the East, tho. That’d be swell.

And…it’s official The first-place team in the NL West has a losing record. Ahhh, reminds me of those golden days of…what, two years ago?

So, dalej42, you sweatin’ yet? We’re half a game behind you, and we’re semi-healthy again.

But Furcal is gone for the season. We need a shortstop, and I’m afraid they’re going to trade away young talent to get one. I’d rather write off the year than trade away Ethier or Loney.

LaRoche can play SS and spell DeWitt or Nomar at third. Not that I think anyone is a direct replacement for Furcal. But let’s not panic We’ve been without Furcal for a long time already. It’s not like it suddenly got worse for us.

Plus, I’m fairly certain we can have Andruw Jones run one of the concession stands or something now that he’s healthy again.

Well, the D-backs only goal seems to be to imitate the April version of the Detroit Tigers. So, yeah they need to get it together and soon. The D-backs can’t blame injuries, just youth. Young teams are inconsistent but this is ridiculous.

So, you think Hank should have kept Torre? I think so, I think we’d be closer to first.

As poor as the last 7 games have been, I think it was time to move on from Joe Torre. I still believe this was the right time for a young manager like Joe Girardi. The team is changing, few will admit it but this is a transition year. Hank did say he understands that this might be the year the Yanks don’t make the post-season. The Yanks are trying to make the playoffs while rebuilding. Ambitious and it may prove impossible. Though a few less key injuries and they would probably have been right near the lead.

So good luck to Joe Torre, but I am glad the team is going younger and faster. Joe G. should be a good man to lead the new look Yanks of the upcoming years.

All that said …
Why the hell didn’t Joe G have Cabrera bunt the other night!

Well, if it weren’t for that ninth inning miracle you guys pulled off a couple of nights ago, you’d be in second place right now.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of adjustments the D-Backs make after the all-star break to get their act together. They have the talent to win, but it’s like they’ve forgotten how.

After a horrific June it’s good to see the Phillies start off July on a brighter note. I went to the game last night, hoping only that the Phillies wouldn’t get blown away, and I was rewarded with a super exciting game with the Phillies pulling out a win with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth. Most of that is thanks to the Phils tough play, but I think a nod of thanks has to be sent Manuel’s way for pulling Santana in the 9th. 95 pitches. He was shutting the team down. Why pull him? I am not sure. But, I really can’t complain.

The Phillies sent Brett Myers down to the minor leagues to get his head together. I am glad he accepted the demotion in order to work on his game. But, the quotes I have read from him don’t put him in a shining light. He’s still complaining about being a starter, instead of working out of the bullpen - “I realized last year that I’d only be a good starter. . . . I felt like I had rock-star status as a closer.” They let him be the opening day starter. That’s pretty rock star in my book. You think that would have been enough to change his mindset. Second, he was ok as the closer last year, but nothing close to rock star. Phillies’ closer Brad Lidge’s performance, so far, this year HAS been rock star, so, please Brett, get used to being a starter. I hope he can turn it around. I don’t have a lot of confidence in them picking up another starter like Bedard, or Sabathia around the league.

RickJay, thanks a lot for the league round ups. Fantastic reading.

Given the rumors that are swirling about the possible trading of one or two of the kids, I can see the Dodgers making Cabrera or Eckstein an offer for a year or so. But Nomar can still play short if he has to. Just not every day.

I wonder if we could get Crisp for center field? Possible, but the Red Sox would demand too many of our youngsters.

I do not see the Red Sox trading Crisp. They’re going to be in a very tough fight in the AL East. I’d want to make damn sure that Ortiz is healthy before even thinking about a trade.

Eckstein makes some sense, actually, but not enough that I’d be willing to give up Ethier, Kemp OR Loney. Or LaRoche, for that matter. As you say, I’d rather surrender the season than to let those guys get away. There may come apoint when I consider LaRoche more expendable, but we aren’t there yet.

I wonder if we could get anything for Jason Repko. That poor guy has been up and down so many times – I think he could play in the majors for someone else on a daily basis.

Well, if I was Colletti, I’d consider trading any of the following to get a good shortstop and a decent center fielder: Alvarez, Brazoban, Schmidt, Bennett, Sweeney, Repko, Pierre, Young, Jones, and if really pushed, Hu. The rest are not on the table…not for anybody.

I’d have some reluctance with Delwyn Young, but I think I agree with the rest of your list. The problem is, not much of that list is really marketable. Sweeney, Repko, Pierre and possibly Brazoban draw interest. I don’t think we can afford to get rid of Jones, sadly, but I’ve managed to continue to delude myself into thinking he’s going to produce offensively at some point. And I think Chin Lung Hu is going to turn it around eventually.

Maybe we can give Schmidt back to the Giants – what a one-two punch he’d make with Zito these days!

Hey, my Reds can actually beat somebody! The surrogate Reds, the Washington Nationals, the only team in the NL worse than the Reds! Yay!
:frowning:

And now the Dodgers will come take first place.

Maybe not. The Giants found some life.

Diamondbacks! Wake UP!!!
