This looks like it could be an awesome movie but Eisenberg is just a terrible choice for Luthor. In fact, I don’t think anyone has done a great job portraying Lex Luthor on the big screen.
Agreed. I think they should have gone with someone older-looking and more serious. Luthor is as much a political lobbyist as a scientist in the comics and I don’t buy Eisenberg in that role at all.
Lord Jesus, is that a trailer for a movie or a miniseries? Superman appears to be opposed to the government, or maybe running it, and Batman is fighting him, and there’s Lex Luthor, and Wonder Woman somehow is involved. What the hell?
I think it looks pretty good, but I enjoyed Man of Steel too so what do I know :). I think somehow I’m just in the right spot for these. I have some nostalgia for & familiarity with the characters, but I’ve never been too into them so I’m not bothered by changes to their characterization. Also I haven’t been watching a lot of these blockbusters lately so I’m not burned out on the over-the-top spectacle stuff.
Yes, it does worry that they seem to be throwing in a little bit of everything and may end up with a lot of loose ends. As to Supes being on or against the government side that may be an interesting thing to look into how it works out - iconically Superman is a Kansas farmboy who is all about the American Way, Batman is the outlaw; in the Miller version of the final battle that they seem to be mining for visuals, it’s S who is acting in a quasiofficial role to rein in B who’s the threat.
IIRC, when the rumor hit that Bryan Cranston was cast as Luthor, fans said, wow, if they can get it that right, let’s maybe give 'em the benefit of the doubt on Affleck.
Instant fail, IMVHO. Yeah, yeah, Walter White, bald, menacing, got it. To cast him as a completely different kind of bald menace would have shown a level of production laziness not seen since… oh, I’m sure you have your favorite example of “Yeah! Perfect!” miscasting.
Aaron Paul, now… if they were going to go with a dorky millennial actor, he would have been a Heath Ledger-level possibility. Jesse, with brains, instead of… yet more Heisenberg.
Doesn’t do anything for me.
Some would argue that such laziness worked out well with Patrick Stewart as Xavier. But generally I agree with you.
Hell, I’m one of the few people who regret that we didn’t get to see Nic Cage’s Superman. As opposed to yet another handsome, hunky guy.
What? You don’t think 1990 Nic Cage was handsome and hunky?
Well, casting Eisenberg as a different kind of smug tech billionaire, I guess.
The Suicide Squad Trailer is now out.
And it looks more interesting to me than Batman V Superman.
Is that Harlie Quinn?
Yes it is.
Loki’s the freaking trickster god, the whole point of that scene is that it is so moving that you want it to be true and fall for it, only to find out the whole thing was a lie.
Looks like Juggalo Joker is film canon, now.
Great.
I ain’t no freakin’ monument to justice! I lost my hand! I lost my bride!
Yeah, growing up with the Christopher Reeve movies I got it fixed in my head that Luthor is notably older than Superman. My brother, who’s much more into comic books than I am, had to explain to me that they’re close in age in most DC continuities- this was back when the T.V. show Smallville started and the young Luthor wasn’t making sense to me. I even brought it up in a Thread here and the comic book experts confirmed what my brother had told me- that in almost all the comic book continuities Superman and Lex Luthor are close in age.
Still, it just doesn’t seem right to me. I want Luthor to be at least 15 years older than Clark. More like 20 years older feels better to me.
Mark Waid/Geoff Johns “Birthright” retconning, based on pre-Crisis fanboy-ism. The Post-Crisis Superman continuity before that had Lex as a contemporary of Perry White, not of Clark Kent, and that worked really, really well.
The title is actually Batman v Superman, not Batman vs Superman. And I point that out not because I’m being nitpicky, but because I think it’s a very strong key to what this movie is about.
When I first heard the title I laughed thinking “what is this? A court case?” And then I realized that yes, that’s exactly what Zack Snyder’s going for. A court case isn’t Roe versus Wade. It’s Roe v. Wade. The judicial system doesn’t set up an adversarial relationship.
There are grievances between the two parties and they ultimately get resolved. The first person is the aggrieved party - in this case Batman - and he’s seeking to find justice (if you will) against Superman. In life, just like in this movie, people will confuse this seeking equity as pitting one against the other. But Batman and Superman really aren’t fighting each other, for there’s a larger matter at play bigger than any one side.
In fact, “v.” doesn’t stand for versus at all. It’s shorthand for “and.”
The title should really read Batman and Superman: Dawn of Justice.
