I can, but as I said, I missed the ep where they connected Sebaceans with humans. And I still say any series with a “Babel Fish” or “universal translator” does not deserve to be classed as “hard SF”.
Since the new emotics are obviously of the Devil, I cannot respond in kind, but Claudia Black will be in several episodes (already a ‘introduced’ character in SG1), and Browder will be a key person in the next season. Frell them for not weasaling in Dargo (whatever the hell his name was), but SG1 needs some new meat. Gonna be a great season.
And I promise, my hijacking ends. Back to swearing at BSG.
Things we’ve learned from this ep:
-Boomer is Preggers. I think most of us saw this coming a mile off.
-The Arrow is real and made of copper, or something. It was a not a metaphor for the nuke, as some of us were guessing.
Now, wether it actually does anything is another matter altogether.
-It’s going to be patently obvious to everyone that Boomer is a Cylon. I don’t know if anyone else knows that Balter has already tested Boomer, but if they do, Batler is going to have some explaining to do.
-#6 is without a doubt a chip(assuming she was talking about Boomer’s toasterbaby). Balter knew nothing about that.
-For the moment, Tigh is in command of the fleet and the government. I don’t know if he can handle it.
The question is, whether his wife (uberskank Ellen) can handle it!
I hope you all appreciate the self-control I’ve been exhibiting since I saw this episode a few weeks ago.
I think this episode fell on its face, hard.
The plot went in too many directions, and too many characters were acting in unbelievable ways. First of all, what the hell is Adama doing arresting Roslin? He’s not that stupid. He knows the political situation is unstable, and a coup is hardly going to improve matters. Terrorist Dude is going to gain a lot of support after this.
What exactly is going on with Six? When Baltar says, “You saved my life,” she says, “Want to return the favor?” Uh, what the hell does that mean? She proceeds to take him to some ruins and shows him… something… in a crib that most likely only exists in his mind anyway. Where’s this saving of life? Later, a different Six beats the crap of Starbuck, but why? If the Arrow of Apollo is supposed to lead the humans to Earth, killing Starbuck would seem to blow a big hole in that plan. And if G-Six is jealous of Starbuck, how are the C-Sixes supposed to know about it? There’s no evidence the Cylon agents can communicate over that large of a distance.
The scene with the young lieutenant and Tyrol was kind of boring and pointless. “I think we should stay here.” “I think we should take cover.” “Uh, yeah ok.” Yawn.
Boomer vs. the Base Star was kinda boring too. I should have been saying, “Holy shit they’re going inside a Base Star!” Instead I was thinking, “Hmm, it looks kind of organic, that’s interesting.” And who is this navigator and why do we care about her at all?
Boomer shooting Adama was a shocker, but after the rest of the crap it failed to hit me with any emotional impact. Unlike, say, the pilot episode, which had me practically jumping out of my seat every five minutes.
I don’t have to put my random thoughts on this ep in a spoiler box, do I? Well, I’m not gonna!
I agree with sturmhauke that this ep tried to do too much…they crammed practically an entire season into a 40 min (what we’re left with after commercials) time frame. But I love this show so I can’t be too critical.
Nitpick: Helo screams at Starbuck NOT to shoot BoomerBot because she is preggers. Umm, isn’t that the perfect reason to kill her?? I thought she’d shoot at BB again after Helo said that. It would have made more sense if he said “Don’t kill her, she’s our only way out of here”. Helo’s not the sharpest arrow out there from what I can tell.
Question: And why does Starbuck break down into hysterics when Helo tells her about the future bundle of joy? Does she have a thing for Helo too? Damn that woman gets around. Or does she realize that they are really fracked now if Cylons can have babies.
I’m still not sure if I buy Lee’s sudden decision to defy orders. It seemed to come from out of nowhere. Maybe they cut out a scene where he voiced his opposition to the whole thing–or maybe I missed something (entirely possible!!).
When they arrested Roslin the first person I thought of was Tom Jarek. Wouldn’t it be an irony if he is called upon to lead by Ad…uh, well by whoever is now in command.
OK, and color me whooshed, but was there never a “real human” Sharon/Boomer? She has always been a Cylon?..or did the Cylons replace the real S/B with a better model somewhere earlier. Just one of those questions that’s been nagging me since the series started…
The ending had me gasping aloud…twice!!!
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, where did this whole “Apollo is gay” thing come from, or did I get whooshed again? I’ve seen no evidence of this in the series, and I don’t think the actor who plays Apollo is gay…didn’t he just have some time off the series to be with his wife and new baby?
Please advise.
There’s a DVD titled, iirc, “Crumb”. On it he says he only did acid once.
sturmhauke, My very speculative responses to your thoughts…
By the way, when can we stop using spoilers for the current episode? Putting all that in a spoiler box was hard!
HelloKitty,
I thought Starbuck was distraught because she suddenly realized Boomer (her friend) is a cylon. When she first went to shoot her, she was in shock. Her reaction came when the emotion started setting in. But the preganancy thing probably overwhelmed her. Helo probably doesn’t want to shoot Boomer because the baby is his.
Not sure where the “Lee is gay” thing is coming from either. Gaeta, yes. Lee?
I think the Lee mutiny thing is realistic for his character. He was the president’s advisor and is likely closer to her than the others. Plus, he did sort of start to bond with Zarek on the prison ship episode. Lee seems to have more doubts about his father’s orders than the other officers.
I don’t think there was ever a human Boomer, but I don’t know if it’s been determined yet whether the cylons are new models or copies of humans. I tend to think they’re new models, but that’s just speculation.
I was also a bit disappointed by the arrow being a real arrow. I’m foreseeing some sort of Raiders of the Lost Ark thing where it points to the earth location at the right time of day. I really hope there’s more to it than that.
So, is Baltar president now?
I continue to marvel and enjoy this show in spite of what I consider problems and weak decisions at the outset. This episode was more like a teaser for the next season than a cliff hanger. I enjoyed it, but in that, okay that’s interesting to know fashion rather than the oh, wow cool (except of course for the ending – last time a show got me like that was in the first episode of Hill Street Blues, when Bobby and Renko were shot out of nowhere.)
But as teasers go, July is looking pretty good.
BTW: [Nostradamus]Baltar is going to be the protector of the little cylon love-child, six said as much.[/Nostradamus]
I think that the “Apollo is gay” vibe came from the Sci-Fi special that aired before the season opener, where Jamie Bamber and James Callis make a reference in one of the interviews, I think they were joking around, and it was an offhand remark- didn’t they fake a kiss or something? I don’t remember clearly.
I think they were trying to cram too much into this episode, too. I don’t know why Adama overreacted and had Roslin arrested. I wonder why Apollo drew his weapon without trying to discuss the situation with Tigh first. I can see why Apollo did that- he didn’t want bloodshed to result from a bad decision, but why take it out on Tigh? It’s like he took some extra testosterone for this last two-parter.
That spike that Number Six and Starbuck fell onto should have gotten them both; by the way it was shown sticking out of Six’s chest, it should have run Starbuck through as well. Also, for being such a tough pilot, Starbuck does a lot of crying.
Who is president now? Will the fleet obey Tigh, or is the anti-military sentiment going to win over?
July is too far away. Damn.
My impression wasn’t that Commander Adama was just shutting down President Roslin, but rather that he was shutting down the entire civilian government and taking matters into the military’s (his own) hands. So Laura Roslin is still the President, and Presidential succession hasn’t come into play – but it just doesn’t matter who the President is, since the Fleet is under martial law now.
FWIW, IMDB.com says Ep 2.1’s title is “Scattered”, and will include Tigh and Dualla. No mention of other cast members, and none of the main ones has a single season listed as they usually do when one leaves a show. That may show Adama is coming back - but if he isn’t, can he at least die in the Lorne Greene kneeling position?
Loved it, loved it, loved it - and no, it didn’t seem crammed, the pacing was fast but not rushed.
C-#6 looked like she was impaled by the Arrow itself - did I see that right? Agreed it’s copper, but that just means it will complete a circuit that opens the Tomb of Athena, wherever that is.
Mad props about the music - every note fits perfectly, conveying exactly the right mood, even when G-#6 is blabbing to Baltar about God’s mystic harmony. I do hope the “she” in the box on the Opera House stage isn’t the SG-1 Harsesis Child, but that has to be the way to bet.
The Raptor crew on Kobol is in deep shit - as soon as Cylon Central realizes that basestar is gone, they’ll know that’s where the humans are, and it will only take 33 minutes to get there. The command and control chaos on Galactica will prevent an effective response. Somehow Baltar is going to have to plead for mercy, or else the toasters in the landing party will detect his V-chip and do Six’s bidding …
July is too far off.
Uhm…Sebaceans are slightly genetically enhanced humans. Didn’t you pay attention during Peacekeeper Wars? The Eidolons (sp?) found nekked, primitive humans tens of thousands of years ago, scooped up some samples, shaved 'em, gave 'em a bath, some leather clothes, and a pulse pistol and turned them into Peacekeepers.
The coolness of Farscape is the “Mysticism” it also embraced right along with the tech.

:now I have a headache:
Spring has sprung, the sun is shining, I’m getting on my bike and riding today.
Speculation:
In the original press release regarding BSG’s renewel, I seem to recall reading that the entire cast, including Olmos, would return. That would seem to suggest that Adama is going to live.
Yes!! The music was (and has been throughout the series) fantastic!
Thanks for the insight MaddyStrut, I guess it was alot for Starbuck to take in…finding Helo, seeing Boomer, getting the crap beat out of her by Six, then hearing BB is preggo.
Will be re-watching Monday to catch what I missed!!
Well, seems like most of the loose plot ends were tied up one way or another, and this remains one of the stronger sci-fi series ever aired, but I remain somewhat disappointed with the plot manipulations that have already come to make BSG seem a bit like Dallas in space; I just don’t think the writers have sweated the details sufficiently to make the series truly great, and much of the plot now just seems to be there for the sake of complication. For example, why did the Cylons completely ignore Apollo’s Arrow until the moment someone actually went back and collected it? Why would the Cylons countenance blowing up an entire base star just to get Adama and Boomer in the same room together, particularly since Boomer could have done the deed when Adama came to visit her in sick bay?
With that said, the objective clearly was just to keep a lot of plot moving, which in fact happened, and most importantly, to end with a bang, and this was certainly accomplished; what bigger bang than to (apparently) kill off the lead character? Not that I think for a minute that Olmos will not be back for the next season, understand.
The rest of the random jetsam floating around in my head at the end of the ep:
-
Is the whole Cylon objective actually just to establish a new hybrid human-Cylon race based on a few ‘seed’ humans they’ve temporarily kept alive for the purpose? That’s the impression I get, what both Boomer and Six apparently getting themselves knocked up, and Six’s clear jealousy towards other human (or human-like) females.
-
I know they didn’t show it, but did anyone else, like me, expect whatever was in that cradle on Kobol to be an infant with a little Baltar head, complete with long, greasy hair and face stubble?
-
Is there actually enough room in that Raider to get Starbuck, Helo and (presumably) Preggers Boomer back to Galactica?
Heh. My sister, who found her first attempt at viewing the series closer incomprehensible, is nowing cursing me for getting her into it, and for having to now wait months to see what happens next.
Thanks to everyone who’s contributed to these lively and enjoyable commentaries. I’ll certainly be there asking dumb questions in July when the next series begins.
