Battlestar Galactica 3.9 - "Unfinished Business"

All of this has had spoilers before, and all of this will have spoilers again.

Spoiler policy:

If it’s aired, or if it’s purely speculation, no need for a spoiler box. If it’s from a future episode as revealed by interviews, web content, or kamala-induced clairvoyance, then hide it in a spoiler box, and provide a generally descriptive label so we can decide for ourselves whether or not it’s something we want to know.

Tonight looks like a standalone episode, albeit heavily dependent on ongoing storylines. As such, I shall indulge in a single-line setup.

“Wallace Beery. Wrestling picture. Whaddaya need, a roadmap?”

Tonight at 9pm on Sci-Fi. Be there!

As i’m not a fan of sports, not even <echo>Sports.s.s. In.in.in.in Space!.ace.ace!</echo>, can’t really say i’m looking forward to this one, but i will be watching it, because it’s BSG, and even the worst BSG ep is light-years better than 99+44/100% of the crap that passes for television these days

as long as they keep the Jericho writers away from it (with the exception of adding in Radioactive Zombies, ANY show can be improved by adding Zombies… hmm, i sense a new thread…) i’ll be happy

I hope in this episode they at least give us some indication of how the Apollo/Dualla relationship is going since the liberation, and that they don’t just summarily dissolve it like they did the Starbuck/Anders romance. It would be too much of a “reset.”

I suppose Apollo can’t stay married to Dualla forever. Does she dump him because he’s not over Starbuck, or does she die?

Not sure what to expect tonite. We know about the boxing thing, but hopefully they’ll advance some of the other storylines. I want to see how Bulldog is doing, something with Tigh, and more naked Xenabot…

I don’t think we’ll see any development of storylines recently introduced, like Bulldog. Possibly, we’ll get Baltar as a C-story, but I’m guessing not even that.

The boxing matches look to be a frame to tell what happened in the missing year on New Caprica. What caused Apollo and Starbuck to fall out (again). Why Apollo turned into the Pillsbury doughboy. How Helo and Sharon went from collaborator and Cylon to XO and Athena. Maybe some Tigh stuff, too.

That’s a lot of ground to cover, and I’d hope it doesn’t get too rushed because they pull back to show that they’ve still got all those other balls in the air.

Is this the flashback episode? I know they’ve been planning an installment to fill in some of what was skipped over, but I’ve been resolutely avoiding spoilers so I don’t know which specific episode it’s going to be. If this is it, it seems strange that the promos would be so heavy on the Raging Bull stuff, because you’d think the fans would be much more interested in a Big Canon type installment rather than a throwaway standalone like the previews make this appear to be. But what do I know?

I misjudged this one so far, actually a fairly decent ep so far, i mean, if they can make an avowed sports-hater like ME get into a frakkin’ boxing episode…

Adm. Adama sure packs a mean punch too

i normally hate flashback eps, but this one is done well, fleshing out the NC backstory a little more

Nice touch having Roslyn leading a weakened Adama out of the ring, sort of a callback to when Adama stood by her when she was suffering from the advanced cancer effects and was badly weakened

Why does BSG suck when Mrs. Plant watches?

I thought it was very well done, opening up with the same theme music (i think) for Apollo’s flashbacks in the ring, as was used for his flashbacks while floating around in space, dying.

And Kara, pausing on the balcony to look down at “the dance”, was suddenly the old, super-HOT, Starbuck of Season 1. For just a moment.

This episode was well crafted, and very well done. Even if we’d guessed what the issue between Apollo and Starbuck had been (same as it had been all along), it was still interesting to see the actual events.

And Hotdog, once again, proves he’s an idiot. No, not for calling out Starbuck to fight. For not actually fighting. Damn, boy, hit back!

So, what now? Will Apollo and Starbuck actually make a go of it this time? I admit that things between Starbuck and Anders make a lot more sense now.

Starbuck is a sad, sad person. Something awful must have happened to her to make her so terrified of being loved. I feel bad for her.

Good to see Tigh back in action, but he’s also a sad one.

Bah. So the people we suspected had been doin’ it had indeed been doin’ it. All of them.

And it took an hourlong episode to say so.

I was pleasantly surprised. Thought it was a very good episode, and found much to like:

  1. Adama and Rosilyn are stoners! How cool is that?

  2. Love the concept behind the fights. It’s like the Pit, but you get to really hit people.

  3. Adama has balls. Big brass ones. I like that in a leader.

  4. Naked Kara is very good. Get the idea that Lee is a Ted Nugent fan…(I claim brownie points for a very obscure, yet tacky reference).

  5. Does she always hurt the ones she …hmmm…almost said loves…think I’ll go with fraks instead.

Personal note: Even fictional male on female violence usually bothers me. In this context, it didn’t. Fair fight, and in the BSG universe, women are warriors.

Minor dings for the fights:

  1. Everybody else is boxing, but Starbuck & Lee go MMA?

  2. The Chief got a long count on that first knockdown. I know Adama went into the fight intending to lose, but still…it sorta broke kayfabe for me.

  3. Lee had a clean choke, and he didn’t crank it in to finish the fight. Again, I understand that wasn’t what he wanted, and the fight was a storyline vehicle, but details like that matter.

It took an hour to tell us Apollo & Starbuck secretly love each other? I was expecting a bigger reveal. Well this should please the “I watch it because it’s character driven” crowd.

Rosyln & Adama sneaking a doob around back was funny.

So we’ve got sex, drugs, and lots of bloody violence. Still no gay characters. Whoa, dude. This is like, a family show.

I was expecting Dualla to take off with Anders. That’d be justice.

Why Bulldog? Does he have a subplot developing I missed? I thought he was mostly Cylon pilot fodder.

I really, really, REALLY wanted to see Sharon get in the ring and knock someone clear out of the ring. Maybe one of those large Marine thugs who’ve been acting as her guards for a year.

Next week looks like another stand-alone. They’re suddenly out of food again? Where do you suppose they’re planning on jumping?

I’m with MacTech - I saw the boxing in the teaser last week and thought, “Booring!” If only they had fessed up that this episode was really about naughty drunken sex, I would have gotten into it quicker.

LOVED Dee’s comment, “That’s one interpretation.” At least she knows what’s up. I’m also intrigued by how they ended it. That could be very messy.

Of course, from the teaser for next week, it seems that running out of food will probably eclipse the romantic angst (and understandably so).

Anyway, it’s a decent way to deal with the unresolved sexual tension storyline. Inform the audience that they now hate each other’s guts (of course it’s love hate not hate hate) and flash back to them hooking up. You get the satisfaction of the will/won’t they answer, without sacrificing the tension.

I also really like the ongoing relationship between Adama and Roslin. What great actors, the both of them.

Ya know, thanks to conversations here, the scene where Random Couple walks up to the free bar and snags some booze, my first thought was “Hey, Ron, that could have been the random gay couple that would have satisfied everybody!”

Anyway, other than the no-food bit, I couldn’t make heads nor tails of the next episode previews.

I don’t know of anything in the works for him, but I think there’s several things that could be done with the character…

Oh wait. I confused Bulldog with Hotdog.

Bulldog would be interesting but I have a feeling he’s a one-off character we may or may not ever see again.

Dude, did you not hear Apollo simpering like, forgive me, a three dollar bill?
