Battlestar Galactica 3.9 - "Unfinished Business"

Apollo always sounds gay but I thought we’d established this as a by-product of the actor having grown up confused as to whether he’s British or American.

Anyway, what’s with the Irish jig music? Last ep we had a Battlestar named Valkyrie, this week we’re Irish.

Could Cally look any more pathetic than standing ring-side holding her baby?

Back in season one wasn’t it established Adama Sr. can go one-on-one sparing with his son? How does a wimp like Tyrol beat the crap out of him? Must be the open heart surgery.

Nah, he was simpering like those fellas at Catholic High I refused to shower in the same gym with.

Firefly plagurism. However one spells it.

Didn’t notice that. Spent all the time hoping Mrs. Plant wouldn’t laugh at me for watching it.

Hell, he’s what, 65?

Boy, did this suck or what?

Jamie is definately a Brit, no confusion about that. It’s just that sometimes he’s still channeling Archie Kennedy, whose manlove for Horry makes Clark and Lex on Smallville look platonic. (at least he’s not channeling Lt. Folley, I guess)

And the theme music for the Adamas has always been some kind of pseudo-Celtic music – Scottish or Irish or something.

The real question is, since they introduced the Norse “Valkyrie” as a Battlestar, why have Katee cover up her Celtic cross tattoo with that pyramid thingy. They’ve already bargled their pseudo-Greek mythos with the “Valkyrie”, what’s the problem by adding Celtic Christian symbology?

Adama never intended to win. Remember what he said when Rosilyn tried to give him pointers? He did it to set up his monologue.

And Tyrol ain’t 'zactly a wimp. He was shown to be a warrior during the occupation. May not have the best cardio, but he’s got size, youth, reach, and skills.

Yeah, but it was so campy someone needed to beat the crap out of him.

IMHO, this episode fellated. With great allacrity.

Well, rational minds can differ. I’m a mark for honorable warrior stuff. Surely you at least enjoyed naked Starbuck having an orgasm?

I liked seeing a real human female person with moles and stuff. That was nice.

OK, dammit, I can’t resist.
Ahem.

Like, who hasn’t?

Are you sure she had an orgasm? I remember listening to the podcast when Baltar was being tortured by D’Anna and Six was on top of him doing lots of pelvic thrusting and Ron Moore was talking about how many pelvic thrusts the censors will allow and how you can have sex but you can’t orgasm.

Of course Ron Moore drinks during his podcasts and after this ep, I’m thinking those aren’t just cigarettes we hear him puffing on.

The backstory was interesting, it filled in holes. But I’m with the Plants on this one, I didn’t much care for it. The Roslyn and Adama stuff was a little silly, watching Starbuck beaton Hotdog was silly, and Adama’s speech was, I think, important to the crew. But it took a long time. <yawn>

Dammit, where’s my nitroglycerin?

What happened at the end? We had a cat distraction and missed the last 5 seconds or so. Apollo and Starbuck are hanging on each other and the crowd starts to leave. Sam and D are talking. What did they say?

Not only was it an orgasm…it was a GOOD orgasm. Lee frakked her brains out but good.

I also suspect Ron indulges in various things. Kinda surpised me to see the two highest leaders sparking one like that. Some of the dream sequences from recent episodes strike me as the product of a familiarity with hallucinogens.

Sam looked at Dualla and said “I’m outta here.” Dualla just looked sad, while watching Starbuck and her husband in the middle of the ring propping each other up/embracing and saying “I missed you.” “I missed you too.”

Gonna be kinda hard to go home to the respective loved ones after that.

My theory is that Starbuck and Lee will be friends again, but Lee is staying with Dualla. He’ll forgive her for breaking his heart, but he ain’t gonna forget it.

Not only that, it was* the best damn orgasm in the fleet!*

This episode was the suckiest suck that ever sucked a suck.

I wouldn’t say that. The plot was fairly predictable and I found myself fast-forwarding through some of the slower scenes but it was quite the emotional ride. The chemistry between Kara and Apollo (Love, hate, lust and blood) was definitely above par.

So, while it wasn’t as good as the average BSG episode, it still didn’t suck.

Yes, it did.
Get your ass in the ring.

I don’t need to be a developmental psychologist to guess how screwed up Starbuck is. She loved her dad but he disappeared. Maybe he died? Or he just couldn’t stand being around Starbuck’s mom. Mom was physically abusive and Starbuck has all the old bone fractures to prove it. Plus mom always told her she was worthless.

She finally finds a place for herself in the military and falls in love in Zack Adama. But she allows her love to influence her judgment as a flight instructor which results in Zack’s death.

So, love and Starbuck don’t get along very well. It was easier for her to really like Anders. That way she could cope with his eventual loss.

Speaking of Tigh I noticed something that’s probably just a trick of the lighting. During flashback when Tigh and Ellen are sitting at a table and lean towards each other to kiss Tigh puts his hand on Ellen’s thigh and the light from the sun being low in the sky makes it look like his hand is covered in blood. Cool if someone noticed that and kept it on purpose.

The thing is a lot of the flashbacks weren’t very informative. Tigh and Ellen love each other. Well, we knew that.

Starbuck and Apollo had sex and said “I love you.” Yeah, but they were also drunk. I’m glad no one’s held me to it after I said “I love you” during drunken love making.

Tyrol leaves the Galactica and settles on NC. We knew that. Although the fact that Adama seemed to view it as Tyrol abandoning Galactica and regretting letting him do it was important I guess.

Adama and Roslyn’s flashbacks were cute, but no new information was revealed. In fact, it leaves more questions. By the end of season 2 we already knew they kinda had a thing for each other. Eight months before the Cylon occupation we see they still have a thing for each other and are still dancing around it but things seem to be progressing. So what happened? Roslyn was out of government and Adama wasn’t doing much but sitting watch. Why didn’t their relationship progress? Did something happen to cool their relationship? More back story please.

The point being made here with Starbuck was that she’s damaged goods. She’s a woman who is incapable of dealing with her life when her life is going good – she needs the chaos and misery in her life, so she sabotages herself. Over and over and over again.

When Lee started getting close to her, she sabotaged that relationship by marrying Anders. Now that Sam wants to get close to her, she’s distancing herself from him. I know women like that, and Kara is a good characterization of what they do.

The real question will be if Lee has figured it out, or if he’ll be pulled back into Kara’s chaos. Either way, I feel sorry for Anastasia.

Actually, we didn’t really know that. Most of the time when we’d seen Saul and Ellen, they were flipping back and forth between Ellen nagging Tigh, fighting with each other, and make-up sex. They’re co-dependent alcoholics; that’s how their relationship went. To see them enjoying being together and in love on New Caprica was something new.

I would guess that we are to infer that it is Saul’s military responsibilities that had ultimately been coming between them; once those weren’t the major concern, their relationship was much smoother.

And the important thing with Adama and Roslyn wasn’t their flirting – it was the fact that both of them expected the Cylons to come back, eventually. And yet decided to just go with the moment. That’s the mistake that led Adama to get into the ring and make his speech (enough with the speeches, already!); that’s the bit of information we didn’t know before the flashbacks.

Good post, levdrakon! It’s nice to hear some well thought out opinions and critiques other than “Meh, I didn’t like this ep,” or “Sucky McSuck…”

My theory on the Starbuck/Zack relationship has always been that she “settled” for Zack when she realized she could not be with Lee. Kinda like she “settled” for Anders, huh? Digging even deeper, there is something in Starbuck that makes her feel that she doesn’t deserve Lee…that maybe she feels he’s too good for her, she’d only disappoint him anyway, etc.

Dang writers, always leaving us wanting more!!! ::shakes fist in anger::

I am not a boxing fan, but I did really enjoy “The Dance”, as they called it. I wish we could do something like this at our workplace and get out all the frustrations. Maybe we would all get along better!

LOVED how Roslin was so into it!! When she asked Adama…“OK, so you really want to do this? Well here’s what you need to do to beat him…”

“Get your FAT ASS in the ring Chief!!!” Best line so far this year, we howled in laughter!

Dualla’s pained look at the end of the episode nearly broke my heart, and I’m not the world’s biggest fan of D. Her face told the whole story…she knew she was on borrowed time with Lee and now it’s coming to an end. Sad. Been there, it sucks.

I still have a love for this show that burns with the heat of 1000 Lion’s Head Nebulas.
