I’m not asking why they gave up living in ships, I am asking why they didn’t cannibalize the ships to build their colonies. Two very different things.
Munch Look Burn Notice is one of my favorite shows, I have no problem suspending disbelief. When I eat at McDonald’s I know what I’m getting, but that doesn’t mean that people can’t fuck up fast food. Battlestar Galactica had some serious writing problems throughout but it was so ambitious that I let it go, I loved it enough to just forgive it. But the final ending was just a bunch of sentimental neo-luddite crap. It was poorly thought through. Of course that hippy bullshit was the overarching message that we were being given the whole time. The problem was it was simply forced. People can’t simply, “Give up technology”, which is why I used the example of Baltar knowing about farming. That’s technology pure and simple. So I just don’t buy that the people would give up their ships. First of all doing so dooms the vast majority of their population to death as they work to forage what they need to eat while gathering seeds so that they can eventually farm down the road. If they wanted to dismantle their ships and turn them into plowshares I would’ve been all about it, but they didn’t, they flew a good source of metal they could have used to build shovels, rakes, hoes, wheelbarrows, hammers, screwdrivers, screws, aluminum siding etc… into the Sun.
I’m sorry the ending strained credulity in favor of a forced and illogical poetic ending. I’m not asking for Mal Reynolds or Captain Kirk to continue roaming the stars, I am just not buying that they would completely abandon technology that would help them survive the initial colony stages.
We have different expectations and different ways to look at TV then, thats fine.
