Since I got my new laptop (another alienware) the wireless card hasn’t worked.
I have been using a cheap usb wireless adapter which I happened to already have.
On installing the software it has seen fit to make a folder open every time I start my computer. I want to give the person who added this little feature a nice punch in the face.
How do I stop windows from opening this folder every time it starts?
I’ve looked in the startup folder. I’ve looked in every ini file I could think of.
One place I haven’t looked is the registry but I wouldn’t know where, within, to loook
In the folder menu, click Tools > Folder Options. Click the View tab then go down to the Advanced section and scroll down to “Restore previous folder windows at logon”. If it is checked, uncheck it.
Is it enabled? Many laptops ship with the wireless card disabled. There should be a wireless button on the keyboard near the power button, or it may also be a Fn key (an alternate function of one of the F keys at the top of the keyboard.)
And if that’s not the problem, it’s very likely that a program is launching at startup to open it, as you suspect. You don’t need to fiddle with the Registry, though. Go to Start Menu > Run… and type MSCONFIG. Click the Startup tab and scroll through the items to look for things you don’t want to start and uncheck them. Click OK when you’re finished.
I’ve fairly exhausted all the ways of tring to get it to work. The only thing I haven’t done yet is ring their tech support. I haven’t got around to that yet.
(Yes I did try the laptop’s built in on/off fn key for the wireless adaptor)
I am 98.7% satisfied with this outcome. I’d be 100% satisfied if I knew what put the entry in the startup tasks in the first place and knew how to remove it so that I wouldn’t have to run xp in manual startup mode.
That is not to say that I am 100% appreciative of your help and knowledge. I wish I had you as my advisor at work. I’d be bombarding you with asp questions, network questions, sql db admin questions etc… My current IT manager is a supreme nit-picker and I can’t seek his help without severe communication conflict.
