The Simpeons Season 6 DVD set thread prompted me to start tyhis thread. What DVD sets have you found to have the best and worst packaging?
So far, the best I have ever seen is the Babylon 5 DVD sets. i ercently got season 1 and 2, and damn, but they are sexy. One slip cover over the while set, and then internalyl, it;e like a book, with the pages with THICK plastic that won’t break easily and keeps the discs in place. No sleeves that you slid the DVD out of, that will eventually scratch it all to Hell, and no cplicated fold out system, or individual packages. Doesn’t get any beter than this, and every DVD sert should use this style.
The worst I have seen is probaly the most prevelant style, which I have seen on both 24 and The Simpsons (season 1-5, anyway.) It’s an outer shell, and then the inside folds out into a three foot long snake of sorts, and each disc is in a little paper envelope that, as said before, will scratch it all to Hell. Not to mention the fact that paper is flimsy and tears easily.
An interesting case if that of the Futurama DVD’s. I both like, and dislike, them. They are horribly inconvienent, since it’s a hassle to switch betweeen the DVDs in a season, but they keep each disc very well protected and safe.
I hated the packaging on the Scrubs season 1 DVD set. They have the typical fold-out, but instead of three fold-out sections for each of the three discs, they got cheap and overlapped discs 1 and 2 on the same section. Basically, you need to snap disc 1 out of its holder to remove disc 2, and they are actually TOUCHING each other, allowing the bottom of disc 1 to get scratched up on the top of disc 2. I actually got mine brand-new with a scratched-up disc 1, and had to go through a real hassle returning it to Buena Vista Home Video and getting a new one. Now I keep disc 1 in a separate jewel case.
I have Simpsons Seasons 1-6 and none of mine are in paper envelopes–the snake opens up to a chain of connected jewel cases. Were there other packaged versions?
I think the worst one I’ve seen is for “From the Earth to the Moon”. The main holder is a long cardboard strip with cheap plastic holders stuck to it with hot glue. It folds up to make a square package that fits in a slipcase. Why is that the worst? Because I can tell it they used hot glue as an adhesive because the holder fell off after a few months!
