I hate small talk, too, it drives me batty. I also have a hard time changing topics with people I don’t know very well because I really hate to offend. Confident I am, I doubt this will ever go away. the only other thing I can tell you is: there are lots of fish in the sea. If you don’t catch this one, there are others.
I’m better at reading visual cues women give, though unfortunately I think a certain degree of it is trial-and-error; I can tell you some subtleties, but ultimately you are going to have to observe what woman ‘A’ did right before she kicked you in the balls, and what woman ‘B’ did right before she took you back to her apartment . Once you figure that out, it gets a little easier, and you start to feel more confident, because you have a better handle on how she is reacting to you, and there is less guesswork/hand wringing about it.
