When your alarm goes off in the morning, assuming you don’t go with the beepbeepbeepbeep* buzzer, what song is the best to wake up to? Personally I want something that’s relaxing and easy on the ears.
The two that I heard this week (so by default they are my choices) were Ricky Nelson’s song about going to a garden party, and John Lennon’s Imagine. Neither of them are loud or blasting like The Who or Led Zeppelin, not that I don’t like those bands, I just don’t want to wake up to them.
What do you want on that radio when you wake up in the morning?
When I lived in Tokyo I would sometimes turn on the radio right after my alarm clock went off. I would listen to the beginning of the (then) Far East Network morning show.
It was hosted by a Marine sargeant and she would always play this clip from some old movie, where the characters are shouting “GOOD MORNING!!!” to each other. Inbetween these bursts of solicitation the sargeant would urge the listener to “tap dance” to the fridge, get the milk, tap dance to the table and sit and eat some cereal.
It sounds strange, but it got stuck in my head every day and I still remember it.
When I was in high school, I used to load up my alarm with my brother’s Everclear CD, which started out with “So Much For the Afterglow.” That was a pretty good song to wake up to, because is starts out with this quiet choral thing and then gets louder, so it sort of wakes you up gradually.
These days I just go for the infamous “Beep-beep-beep” alarm. I’ve slept through one too many CDs.
This song is the best song to wake up to, period. The beat sounds like something from a coffee commercial, it gradually gets harder as the song goes along, and the lyrics are related with waking up.
"awake on my airplane
awake on my airplane
my skin is bare
my skin is theirs
awake on my airplane
awake on my airplane
my skin is bare
my skin is theirs
I feel like newborn
and I feel like a newborn
awake on my airplane
awake on my airplane
I feel so real…"
I second Rage Against the Machine, “Wake Up”, just for the irony.
But I think the best waking-up song would have to be “Day by Day”, by Badmarsh and Shri. I so love that song. It’s just a beautiful, beautiful song. Check out Track 7 on the “CSI” soundtrack.
I have a collection of mini-CD’s that I burn two or three songs on to, and rotate them periodically. Right now we’re on “Surfer Girl” by the Beach Boys. Some of my others:
Blackbird - The Beatles
Zombie Jamboree - Rockapella
Here Comes the Sun - The Beatles
Come Sail Away - Styx
Jump in the Line - Harry Belafonte
Sometimes I worry about doing this with songs I like. It feels like I might turn against them because they wake me up in the morning.
