Hey hey Dopers… Im just kinda curious if my love for the original 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System is shared with any dopers…
The originla Nintendo is my favorite home Video game system… followed very closely by the Turbo Grafx 16.
both systems had their pros and cons… but i wont go into details…
so whats YOUR favorite Home Video game system?.. why?
The NES rules. I still have mine, even though it’s going on 15 years old and most of the games won’t work unless you’re willing to go through ten minutes of blowing the dust off the connectors and/or jiggling the cartridge around inside the NES.
No question, the NES was a great thing. I did like the SNES better, though–mainly because of Chrono Trigger and the Final Fantasy RPGs. I’m currently trying to decide whether I’m going to hold out for the new Nintendo or go over to the Sony Dark Side.
Tips for those old cartridges: Don’t blow on the contacts. Traces of saliva make them corrode even more. Use a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol to clean them. If they’re still flaky, carefully disassemble the cartridge and clean the contacts with an eraser, followed by another alcohol treatment. Also, replacement parts are still available for the NES if the cartridge slot itself is still hosed.
Although I agree that the NES had excellent games, I would (personally) disqualify it because of Nintendo’s evil business practices. Don’t get me wrong, most of my favorite games were on that system. However, I have always hated their smug attitude. So instead, I throw my vote to the Atari 2600. Man, I remember all the cool games I had for that system back in the day… Spy Hunter, Dig Dug, Frogger, Donkey Kong, Pole Position… and so many more that influenced my nerdiness throughout the years.
THe NeoGeo right now becuaes you can play that 330Mega game system on your PC with an emulator! Awesome. They even have a button so you can put in pretend quarters.
Come now people. Nostalgia is great. I’m all for touting that which you’ve held dear, but let’s evolve with the technology at hand shall we?
I’ve had my Playstation for 2 years, and the moment Playstation 2 comes out, that sucker’s gonna be a door stop.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand your point. I just don’t understand why you’d want to suffer through those blocky graphics and simplistic gameplay, when you can have mind-swirling video and strategies that NASA scientists couldn’t figure out.
By all means, keep your old Nintendo’s hanging around. Sometimes you gotta go back to your roots, but start saving your money for the full body holograph suits that should be coming out anytime now, or you will be hopelessly behind the times.
Hey Balance, I crossed over to the Sony dark side this year and I love it. Stronger, no. But easier. More seductive. I wasn’t planning on it, but I played Syphon Filter at a video game store and that was it. I was a goner.
I still have my old NES and SNES, though. Sometimes you just need to sit down and try to get through the original Zelda with one life.
…playing the latest holgraphic rendition of Pong or Frogger, right? I’m not saying I’m not looking forward to those games, but I think living through the Atari and early Nintendo years makes you appreciate those colored graphics much more. Plus, those old games gave me those twitch skills that are oh so necessary even in today’s action games. Anyways, I’d like to say I think it’s great to remember the games of old, and remind you to look past the pretty graphics of today for some genuine gameplay.
That said, I’m saving up my money this summer to buy a Dreamcast, I have a PS2 reserved, and (if the price is low enough) I see myself with a Dolphin whenever the big N decides we deserve it.
denbo, I’m probably going to go with a “gray wizard” approach. I’ll just get both–I am stronger than the lure of Darkness! I shall bend it to my will!

Yes, my Master…
I’ve been through atari and NES in my time. Then I bought Sega Genesis about 10 years ago and have used it ever since. It will probably retire when Play station 2 becomes available, but it has held my interest the longest of any of the systems I have had.
Why do you say that, mblackwell? Are you saying that the Genesis is worst than even the Atari Jaguar? Worse than Turbographix 16 (at least the version and games we got here in the states)? Genesis was a great system; the Sega CD and 32X sucked though
I totally disagree. Genesis had a great variety of games, smooth gameplay and great graphics (for a 16 bit system). SNES was close, put much more pricey when it first came out. That is why I went for Genesis. Now I can buy Genesis games for $3.
snicker…does anyone even remember the Atari Jaguar/3DO war? What a non-event that was, they both lost. Har. When we talk “worst system”, someone’s gotta bring up the 3DO.
Best? Hm. I like my N64 a lot, but the cartridge game format is on its last legs. Too bad; I like the zero-loadtime. Games on CD have always seemed to me more like cinema than interactive gameplay. Also, the N64 controller is a work of art.
Anyway, just to be different, enter my vote for the N64.
I cut my teeth on Pong and the Atari 2600. In its day the 2600 was about the coolest thing ever invented.
The best system of all time was Intellivision. It’s competitors, Colecovision and the Atari 5200 just didn’t stack up. Intellivision had the best sports games by far for its day. I still have blisters from all night baseball sessions.
For today the Playstation is the one to beat even though the N64 is more powerful. Carts are just too limiting even if they are faster.
Down the road? no way to tell but I’m betting X-Box will beat out Playstation 2 but knowing me I’ll probably get both anyway.
Am I the only Dreamcast owner on the SDMB? I love the thing. Tony Hawk, Rayman 2, Hydrothunder, RE2, NBA 2K, Virtua Tennis, and plenty others have kept me oh so happy. I still have all my old systems (TG16, 2600, Intellivision, NES, SNES, N64, Sega Nomad (portable Genesis), 3do, Saturn, and a broken PSX) and love em, even the 3do. When Road Rash came out for that it blew everything else away. I still haven’t seen anything for the PS2 that says “must buy” yet. I’m going with the DC for now.
Worst system? The Jaguar comes a close second to the festering pile of crap that was the Phillips CDi.
My love for RPGs started with the NES, specifically the first Final Fantasy. However, SNES has the most extensive RPG collection of all time. Most of the SquareSoft titles that are available on SNES were among the best. Even though PSX has a good amount of RPGs here and there, it is not comparable to SNES. Therefore, I consider SNES to be the best video game system.
However, despite the success of NES and SNES, I am not a loyal fan when it comes to N64 due to its crappiness. It might just be me, but it seems like every game is exactly the same except for different characters and landscape. I swear, they are all the exact same game.
You cretens. The best system ever was the Odyssey2000. Had K.C.Munchkin, Robotron… Even came with a built in Keyboard and the Joysticks were way easier to use than an Atari’s. Why it never became a hit I don’t know, but I’ll take that again anyday over the NES. This must’ve been 1982-1983 when I had it too I would guess.
I used to be a die-hard Nintendo fan. Then my favorite RPG, Final Fantasy, crossed over to the Playstation. Well I couldn’t be left behind so I had to get the machine. I am so glad I did. The Playstation rocks! Plus it has the largest selection of RPGs out there. I can’t wait for the PS2 (backwards compatable, why didn’t anyone think of that before) unfortunately I didn’t manage to reserve one so I’ll be stuck waiting until Christmas time.
