Better Call Saul 1.03 "Nacho" 2/16/15

Totally agreed. I like that the show is keeping us guessing about Jimmy’s scruples. I Think they’re really trying to keep him likable but still smarmy in that lovable Saul Goodman way. Where as with Walt’s character, he really lost sympathy with a lot of the audience (though I still liked him).

I thought the family was in the boat too.

She’s certainly the one wearing the pants in that family.

What could the Kettlemans’ plan have been- after camping out a few days reappear? Then what?

I wanted to kiss them for that line.

I get the impression that he got caught a lot sooner than he expected so he hadn’t made any end game plans, so I don’t think they’d thought it through beyond a “We have lots of cash so it can’t be hard to get away” notion.

Do you think Nacho will get the money?

The show has done everything but stamp that on her forehead, to give that impression.

Which means that it may not be the case. As with everyone thinking they were in the boat, it may be another bit of misdirection.

“robot sex voice”, “you see, this is why people hate lawyers”, “yeah”. Mike becomes more than just a gag with perfect timing, and a believable conversation, given context.

Good, colorful textural writing, directing and acting. It satisfies so far. If anything else, they developed it both faster and with a more complex character and situation from the start. I hope they can keep it up.

Heads up all–as with BB, there is an insider podcast featuring showrunners, directors and actors available for BCS. So far they’ve only released one for the first episode, but I’m sure they’ll get the schedule figured out. A search for Better Call Saul Insider ought to find it in your favorite podcast app.

In BB Saul has a law degree that has the name Saul Goodman and is from the American University in Samoa. I know that he admitted his real name was Jimmy McGill, but he was already practicing law under that name so presumably that would be the name on his diploma. I wonder if they’ll retcon the diploma name.

Will ‘Saul’ get his apology fruit platter from the cops?

I still don’t understand what the Kettlemans were going to do. This was kind of a disappointment for me. In real life, I would think they would have sniffing dogs and whatever resources possible to find a kidnapped family. I also thought it was a little goofy how Saul was the one who found them through advice of Mike. I just hope this doesn’t turn into some over the top series like Sons of Anarchy. It does scare me that they have a Sons of Anarchy writer on this show.

Thought that Mike’s story about the runaway bookie where he mentions a possible hiding location as the NJ pine barrens a shout-out to The Sopranos, but that could be a stretch.

Great acting job by Odenkirk in the jail visit flashback.

Also, hard to get a handle yet on Saul/Jimmy and Kim’s relationship, but their phone dialogue was a hoot.

I don’t know how much dogs would help if it was a kidnapping. The police don’t think they were kidnapped and forced to walk somewhere. They presumably believe the Kettlemans were forced into a car and driven away. A dog wouldn’t be able to help in that situation.

Jimmy had one advantage over the police - he had good reason to believe that the Kettlemans were not actually kidnapped. The police might consider that a possibility, but they are currently operating under the assumption that it was a kidnapping. Saul has knowledge they don’t: (1) that they disappeared shortly after being warned about their safety; (2) that Nacho had nothing to do with it. While it’s possible that another criminal abducted them, it’s unlikely. So Jimmy found them because he was the only person looking for them in that general area.

I like that they didn’t make the cops bumbling and incompetant. They may be wrong, but they seem to be pursuing pretty reasonable lines of thought. The reason that Saul comes to the right conclusion isn’t because the police are dumb, but that he kept information from them that he has and they don’t - the timing of the warning call relative to the disappearance.

I’m a little disappointed that Saul starts out as criminal. I expected there would be some turning point in the story. Anyway, it’s not all that interesting yet, but I’ll keep watching. I figure Hank will show up eventually, and maybe more characters from Breaking Bad besides Tuco.

Maybe he wanted a Diploma with “Saul Goodman” on it, for the wall of his office, and you can get one from that “University” by bribing the right people or taking some online tests or something. I have no idea if the American University in Samoa is a legit University or not.

My guess is that they were waiting for news that the police still considered it a kidnapping, but had given up on solving it. The biggest danger for the Kettlemans is creating an evidence trail that shows them heading for safe haven (such as a nation with no extradition treaty). By sitting in the woods for a few weeks, they let the case get cold. Then no one will be on the lookout for families buying tickets to Micronesia.

I completely forgot about that flashback! What was that about? Assault and destruction of property along with possibly being labeled a sex offender?

Jimmy told Chuck “it was a simple Chicago sunroof”. Urban dictionary has several definitions for that term. I’ll spoiler the link because the definitions are NSFW.

All of the definitions on Urban Dictionary were added yesterday or today so they could be bogus definitions people added after the show ran.

Urban Dictionary is the most useless “dictionary” in the history of civilization. Pretty much anything can be defined as anything:

How tall would a woman have to be to pull off that little stunt?
