Better Call Saul 1.03 "Nacho" 2/16/15

This is one of the greatest annoyances about the Internet: the fact that those definitions were almost certainly invented from whole cloth in response to a line on a television show, will be recorded nowhere (except here, I guess).

And in the future, if someone looks up the term, the fact that the definitions were invented won’t be recoverable even if the correspondence in dating is observed–of all the things that happened on that date, who would guess that the airing of a particular episode of *Better Call Saul *was the one thing that’s relevant?

I agree to some extent. I didn’t get into BB right away, so I’ll stay tuned for sure. There’s a whole lot of “leaps” in logic so far. I hope they find their footing once the story starts to pick up.

Maybe they should have used a “Cleveland Steamer” instead?

Well, they presumably had to run out in 15 minutes in the middle of the night, so their first priority was to get safe. Then they (or so they thought) had a few days to figure out their next move, which could easily have been something like calling a friend or relative who they REALLY trust on a (pre-acquired) burner phone and saying “hey, meet us at this particular trailhead and then drive us to another state, please and thank you”.

How does a municipal treasurer convert over a million in embezzled funds into physical cash?

Okay, maybe that wasn’t the whole 1.6 million, maybe it isn’t even all of what was left after purchasing things like a boat, but still it’s a large amount of cash. No bank is going to disperse that much paper without the legally required paperwork.

I agree, he couldn’t get it in cash all at once.

He could have been sucking out cash in small amounts over a long period of time.

Maybe that explains the rapidity of his response to the warning call - if he’s been sitting on a gradual accumulation of cash in his house for a long time, he’d be really worried about being ripped off.

The fact that they didn’t is much clever. You get the gist that it’s some sort of sexual term similar to Cleveland Steamer, but you don’t know what. You can take a guess, and the imagination might come up with something like those entries on urban dictionary, but you never know. It’s more clever and less vulgar than simply giving a known, common slang term like that.

It’s not, there is no such university in real life, searching for it online only leads to Saul Goodman references. There is no universities in American Samoa only a community college.

As for the discrepancy in names on his law degree, I imagine that either its an outright forgery or that in universe “American University in Samoa” is an online degree mill where anyone can obtain a piece of paper under any name.

Why did Jimmy say he was calling his mom from the “Clark county jail”? ABQ is not in Clark county. Chicago is.

I was a little bit confused by that… is it possible that the jail was in Chicago, where Jimmy still lived, and his brother and come FROM Albequerque?

Cook.

Yes he was in Chicago and his brother had come a long way - from Alberquerque.

I didn’t think there was any doubt this wasn’t Chicago, since he said it’s where he’s from, where he did his Slipping Jimmy act, and it seemed several years prior to 2001. All implicit of course, but still, it adds up just fine.

As I watched this I realized that to someone who had never seen Breaking Bad, they’d be really confused about Mike’s role in the story. To a new viewer, it would appear he’s just a grumpy old man that Saul is going to go to through out the series for advice on each case when he hits a roadblock.

Regarding the doll: When we saw the inside of the house (and already sorta know where this was heading) my first thought was ‘this house is way to torn up for a home invasion’. Then I realized that Saul is going to notice that things are missing that would show/prove that they would have taken them with them, that some planning had gone into it. For example prescription meds or toothbrushes or some little thing like that, then I saw the doll stand. I liked that the other girl (I think she’s a layer for HHM) just couldn’t connect the dots. I do hope that they don’t end up turning this into another detective or cop show. Jimmy gets a case, Jimmy gets into the house and finds something the cops miss and that’s how he gets his client out of trouble. Even if it was only until they start ramping up towards Saul breaking bad, it would get old. There’s enough of those shows.

That’s correct. His brother flew up to Chicago from Albuquerque. During the jailhouse conversation, there was an exchange where Jimmy said he didn’t know how to spell the name of the city, and all he knew about it was that it was where Bugs Bunny should have turned left.

Uh there is also Clark County, Nevada. isn’t it a bit more likely he’s in Las Vegas during the flash back / flash forward?

The McGill family is from Illinois (Slippin’ Jimmy, you’ll recall, made his name in Cicero). This scene was set in Chicago years before the events in BCS – Chuck was already practicing law in Albuquerque, and flew back at his mother’s request to help his screw-up brother. Jimmy greets him with a comment about how long his trip had been.

Impossible. That would mean we’d have to imagine call outs to Pawn Stars, but it’s on a competing network.

Thanks guys. I wasn’t paying close enough attention so I thought they were in an Albequerque jail.

I certainly had the impression that Jimmy was in jail in Chicago. It was mentioned that Chuck had to travel a long way, and Jimmy said that the only things he know about Albuquerque were that he couldn’t spell it and that Bugs Bunny should have taken a left there.

There’s a FB page for the University Of American Samoa which appears to have been created in May 2012, and contains numerous references to Saul Goodman. Presumably it was created either by someone connected with BB or a fan.
