Better Call Saul 1.07 "Bingo" 3/16/2015

Saul didn’t do much lawyering for Mike. It made them even for Jimmy’s “Juan Valdez bump n dump”, and subsequent smoothing over with the angry young cop.

I haven’t listened to this weeks podcast, but last week(?) Vince mentioned that the toilet guy’s name was Jacocks. I don’t remember the lineage, but Vince said it was his wife’s sisters married name or something like that. In fact, a lot of the names in Breaking Bad were names from his IRL family. Anyways, the name Jacocks is in Battle Creek as well.

Two guesses
A)It was to show Chuck that he’s doing honest to goodness work
or more likely
B)It’s going to be littered with little mistakes (“I just have to fill out that 413”/“you mean 513”) so that Chuck will want to help or Jimmy can ask Chuck to help. I’m not 100% sure on the end game, but it’ll get Chuck out of the house and on the road to recovery.

I think B is closer. I think it was self-serving AND loving on Saul’s part. Chuck will check his brother’s work and fix it and it gives Chuck something productive to do.
Saul peeked through the window to see what his brother was doing–showing that he wanted Chuck to get curious and look through them.

I feel like the “Juan Valdez bump n dump” (sorry, I love that phrase) was that moment. Jimmy finds out Mike is 1) suspected of murder, 2) not above sneaky little “Slippin Jimmy”-style tricks, and 3) is willing and able to use those tricks on a cop investigating him for murder. Between making quick work of subduing Jimmy, his correct prediction about the Kettlemans, his cavalier attitude regarding authority, and his ability to pull off risky stunts like stealing the notepad, Saul knows all he needs to about Mike. His perception of Mike as a decrepit, power tripping senior citizen in a parking booth has disappeared over the last few episodes.

I have not seen* Breaking Bad,* but I am watching* Better Call Saul*. I surmise from the web that Saul worked for Walt and Mike worked for the Hispanic guy.
Set me straight in a spoiler, please.

Correct. Unless you’re referring to Nacho or Tuco, then no. Mike will work for someone not (yet??) introduced on BCS.

Saul just can’t win. I presume that sometime between “now” and BB, Saul decided that Doing the Right Thing was for losers.

Here is an article from Forbes, suggesting that Saul is the epitome of Good Lawyer. He doesn’t even get the amount correct.
Did he add his earned income to the bag, or just the bribe?
What is Kim like in* Breaking Bad*?

Here is thelink.

Saul is what he is, he just doesn’t know it yet.

Or at least that’s the idea. To be honest, I’m not sure if I’m buying the transformation from Jimmy to Saul. They seem like very different characters. Jimmy is just too nice. Somehow I’m finding Mike more interesting. It’s the same kind of thing with him, though. He clearly has a moral compass and is concerned with doing the Right Thing, but somehow he ends of killing people and living a life of crime, because… well, it’s who he is. And in his case, I’m buying it.

Is Kim a former Wife, a girlfriend? What is her role in Breaking Bad?

He’s trying to live up to his brother’s expectations.

Their relationship has yet to be defined, unless they’re just friends. She never appeared, or was mentioned, in Breaking Bad.

I noticed and thought through the same thing and came to the conclusion that the whole plan to spray the money so that it could be tracked down via black-light was conceived by Jimmy(Saul). He knew Mike was a bassass detective and ninja based on Mike knowing intuitively where to find the Kettlemen’s when they ran away, and then how he was both confident and capable enough to pickpocket a detective. After that, his ability to deal with the doofy Kettlemans wasn’t much in doubt.

I think it was Saul’s plan because it started when he took out the money with thoughts of returning it. But merely returning it wouldn’t have accomplished much, unless he could use it as bait to discover and recover the Kettlemans entire stash, so that had to be his plan from the beginning.

Thanks, Blank Slate.

I’m guessing law school classmates, perhaps?

Well, no: he’s doing “elder law”, which doesn’t usually involve going to court with a defendant. He’s drafting wills and powers of attorney and the like, which is just keeping him afloat. It’s easy money, if boring work. It seems clear that the fates are conspiring against him landing higher profile cases. While he is glib, he’s not a Harvard Law grad, and a big money firm is not going to hire him based on drafting wills and public defender work. Eventually, Mike will probably start sending business his way, since Mike’s read on Jimmy is that he is easily corruptible.

Most likely, they met at work after Saul stopped being Slippin’ Jimmy and went to work in the mailroom at HHM with the help of his brother.

The Kettlemens continue to baffle me. I keep thinking they were up to some brilliant plot and we viewers were being challenged to figure it out.

I know the odds are they were just crazy or stupid. But could there have been any sanity associated with them trying to keep the money?

Could they have had some plan for keeping the money hidden and getting away with it?

Like I said … BAFFLING

Mrs. Kettleman is goofy.
