Better Call Saul 1.07 "Bingo" 3/16/2015

Mrs Kettleman didn’t give a crap so long as SHE gets to keep the money. If Jimmy managed to keep Mr. K out of jail, that would be great. If not, she still gets the money. She was the one pushing to go to trial, not him.

They definitely met through his brother. She said that the firm put her through law school so she was probably a secretary there who showed promise. Jimmy would have had plenty of opportunity to meet her.

In listening to another podcast (I’m a few behind), it’s mentioned by one of the writers that Kim and him are exes. I think he mentioned something like 10 years married.

Doesn’t Jimmy remark to Mike in an earlier episode that it’s baffling how stupid criminals can be?

Jimmy, who is doing the “Right Thing”, is much more savvy about the crime business than the crooks. Which, I suppose, is the larger point.

Thank you, cmyk.

I keep hearing about how the Kettlemans are ‘clueless’ - and I think it’s true for Mr K, but I think Mrs K knew exactly what she was doing.

I imagine that she had grown tired of her milquetoast husband, but she doesn’t believe in divorce. So how can she get rid of her husband for the next thirty years? Talk him into embezzling and then get him sent up the river. And as a bonus, she’ll have over a $1M to take care of the kids and keep them in their affluent suburban lifestyle (and don’t tell me she can’t spend it - Walt seemed to do okay with his ill gotten cash). Plus she becomes a sympathetic character in the community. And, of course, she knows that Mr K will go along with whatever she says.

So when she breaks down at the end, I see it as the final realization that her grand plan has failed. Say goodbye to the lifestyle, Mr K comes back in 18 months, and she will have to get a job to support the kids. Her worst nightmare.

In what reality does she keep the money if her husband gets busted?

The show presented it that way. If he returns the money he gets 18 months. If he doesn’t and it goes to trial then he will likely get 30 years. If they can’t find the money, they can’t take it back. They are claiming innocence.

For the first few episodes he was doing court appointed defense attorney gigs. This elder law thing is temporary.

I’m with ya. But he’d be found guilty. From there, he’d be sentenced, then wouldn’t the city have grounds to pull warrants or find other means to mitigate the $1.6M loss from the Kettleman’s assets/wages?

I mean, sure. They could hide the cash. But then what’s the point of sitting on cash you can’t spend?

If Mr. K goes to prison–could the county seize all of their on the books assets (house, boat, etc)? If so, then 1.6 million in cash is a great way for Mrs. K to go start a new life in Alaska or Maine.

I thought that he was going to specialize in elder law.
Obviously, things change.

Yes. At some point he specializes in “criminal” law.

Is $1.6M enough to bring in the FBI?

I think Kim and Chuck, people he seems to actually care about, are going to meet sad fates and out of the ashes will rise Saul.

Nicely done. Very nicely done.

Please post more?

Seems to me there are ways to get around that.

She could go to Las Vegas (just my personal favorite) and use a fake name and open some foreign bank accounts - especially in jurisdictions where its illegal for banks to give any info to the cops - like Switzerland).

Then she could go to Mexico for a brief vacation and from there she could buy lots of real estate in Mexico and maybe even in the USA too. She could buy other hard assets like gold and diamonds and stick them into a Mexican safe deposit box.

She could always buy some things to make her life in the States a little comfortable. But the big payoff comes when the kids are grown and gone and she can move to Mexico and live like a queen.

No? It’s exactly what I would do except for one tiny change … strike queen and enter king

Yeh, but look what Walt had to do in order to launder and conceal his earnings. His wasn’t embezzelment either. Just cash by ill-gotten means. And for the length of it, he wasn’t caught.

Then, when he was, he had to

go into hiding for a year in NH, then blackmail the Schwartz to deliver the money to Walt Jr after so long. Then he died. Not a great long-term plan, and Walt was a mastermind.

Not only that, but if that was her motive, she’d be justified in divorce with the struck deal. He’d still be guilty of a very distasteful crime.

…or New Hampshire.

… in a very, very, rural shack.
