Better Call Saul 2.02 "Cobbler" 2/22/16

Yes. Jimmy is a lawyer. But when talking to the police, I think you want a criminal lawyer and it seems to me that Jimmy has done a little bit of many different kinds of law. But he is not primarily a criminal lawyer.

I’m not suggesting that Jimmy should act as the Hummer guy’s lawyer. I’m suggesting it would be best if they each have their own criminal lawyer.

I’d really like to hear from a criminal lawyer on this. Was it really a good move to go and meet with the police? I would have thought it would be better not to participate in a “fishing” expedition because you are just giving the police more info they will use against you.

I think Dewey Finn makes sense. But isn’t it ver dangerous to try to actively outsmart the police? Couldn’t the result of that be more serious charges?

I’m just guessing from past experience. But wouldn’t it be better to just call their hand and make them either charge you or let you go?

I remember some threads on this board from a while ago in which some experienced criminal lawyers said it was almost always a big mistake to co-operate with the police because all the police want is to find someone to investigate and then arrest.

Of course, this is not real life. It’s an entertaining TV show and it’s very entertaining. So, it’s probably not reasonable to try and judge this show using the same terms as you might use in real life.

Bob Odenkirk is very much a comedy guy, and to me that kind of levity/humor is an essential component for a show he’s the star of. You’re probably aware of it, but it just occurred to me that a lot of people watching this show might not be familiar with his sketch comedy past.

He had a show called Mr. Show with Bob and David in the 90s (the David being David Cross), and before that was a long-time writer for SNL and Conan O’Brien. More recently, he’s also done two sketch comedy series that are both available on Netflix streaming, which I highly recommend to any fan: The Birthday Boys and a brand new Netflix series called W/ Bob and David that is basically a reboot of Mr. Show. It only has 4 episodes unfortunately, though I hope they end up making more.

You don’t want a criminal lawyer. You want a *criminal *lawyer.

Well, there’s still some mystery surrounding Gus Fring’s early life and his dealings in Chile, so there’s that. Then again, Gus will presumably show up on BCS at some point.

On the other hand: I suppose that BCS, in part, is an attempt at answering the question of why Saul and Mike on BB are in the crime business in the first place. Why isn’t Saul a law-abiding lawyer, and why isn’t Mike a cop? I have to admit that I never particularly wondered about that when watching BB, certainly not in the case of Saul, but I guess that the writers did ask themselves that.

One BB character that I did ask that question about, though, is Lydia. I still don’t understand why someone that neurotic would want to be in the meth business, especially since she doesn’t really seem to need the extra money. Half the time, she looks like she doesn’t want to be there. So: Explain Lydia.

Actually, come to think of it, I once suggested a Lydia spin-off in the BB threads, titled “Red Shoe Diaries”. Of course, that title is taken, so someone will have to think of another one.

Chuck is going to drive Saul into becoming Saul. Hes so certain that Jimmy is not fit to be a lawyer hes going to make sure that belief becomes reality. I am just wondering if it will move from passive belief to active attempts to push Jimmy over the edge.

This whole series started off with Jimmy doing criminal defense work as a public defender. That was all he was doing at the time until he tried the skateboard scam.

Wow, I think you guys are ascribing way more malice to Chuck than he’s actually shown. While there’s no doubt that he doesn’t think Jimmy has what it takes to be a competent attorney, there’s still a huge gap between that and “he’s evil and wants to destroy Jimmy”. I think his role from here on out will actually diminish in importance - he already had his impact when Jimmy realized he didn’t want him to work for HHM back when he passed the bar and stopped seeking or caring about his approval.

There may well be another nail or two in the coffin yet to come, but a lot of the damage to their relationship is already done.

Well, to be fair, there was the Drug Money Problem and the stolen pharmaceuticals, which would be a lot more serious than baseball cards and fetish videos. That Hummer was a bit of a giveaway too.

In Mike’s case, they covered this last season. His son was a cop who was killed by two dirty cops because he wouldn’t take the money. Mike murdered them in revenge, and moved to Albequerqui to be near his granddaughter.

Again, Jimmy was there as Pryce’s criminal attorney. Jimmy didn’t need a criminal lawyer because he wasn’t under investigation. Why would Jimmy need his own criminal lawyer there?

Suggested spin-offs:

The Young Mike Erhmantraut Chronicles

The Most Excellent Adventures of Badger and Skinny Pete

Zen and the Art of Vacuum Repair - An ex-military man with a troubled past tries to find his place in the world, eventually finding meaning in helping others escape their pasts.

I’m confused by this statement. Each who? Are you suggesting that Jimmy should have his own lawyer? Why?

Awesome!

Daniel Wormald / Baseball Card Collecting: A Labor of Love

Daniel Wormald and Gale Boetticher:

“People let me tell you 'bout my best friend,
he’s a warm hearted person who’ll love me till the end.”

Somebody gave it a try, and somehow managed to get it completely wrong.

A man dancing and whooping in his underwear while smearing chocolate syrup on himself is definitely NSFW.

It’s not pornographic and there’s no nudity but yeah, let’s call it NSFW.

How he thought that it’s representative of what Saul described is beyond me.

Ever seen the United States of Tara? There you have it. Fully clothed too.

I’ve never seen it. It’s about men sitting on pies?

Nice. I propose:

The Breakfast Club, Redux (… starring Walt Jr., who else?)

Mineral Hour with Hank Schrader (more of a reality series)

Los Pollos Hermanos Con Salsa (about the rise of Gus)

The Other Color Purple (starring Marie)

Yeah Science, Bitch! (of course starring Jesse but also co-hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson)

Ground Control to Major Gale (with this as the theme song)

This one predates the show and is actually Squat Cobbler.
