Better Call Saul 2.05 "Rebecca" 3/14/16

My brief glancing at the linked cite about solicitation had a big, bold, first-order exception: These rules do not apply when the party you’re contacting is also a lawyer.

Perhaps this storyline will lead to how Hector lost his voice.

New Mexico doesn’t have gun registration, so I’m not sure how ownership would be an issue - he doesn’t have to prove that the gun is his. Open carry doesn’t require a holster, and Mike started off in a vehicle - he could easily claim to have taken the gun from his vehicle and put it somewhere visible like sticking out of a waistband or pocket, and the prosecutor has no witnesses saying otherwise. The prosecutor would have to prove otherwise beyond a reasonable doubt for a conviction, and simply lacks any kind of proof. And that’s without Jimmy coming up with anything interesting to blow the case or the prosecutor being reluctant to go hard against a retired cop who got the crap beaten out of him.

New Mexico is a shall-issue state, and by law can’t refuse to issue a permit based on a misdemeanor conviction (other than domestic violence) or for ‘character’ issues that aren’t specifically spelled out in the law, and again doesn’t have gun registration so doesn’t have a ‘possessing a firearm that ain’t his’ law unless they can show he stole it from someone.

Deciding not to take on an entire drug cartel by yourself is not being ‘a little bitch’, it’s being ‘not as self destructive as Walter White’.

Wow, gun laws are sure different in New Mexico than they are here in Canada. We think the right to bear arms means you can wear short sleeves in the wintertime. As far as Mike and the drug cartel goes, he obviously decides to work for Gus Fring later on, so it doesn’t seem Hector’s pitch would have been that persuasive.

It sounded to me like Mark Margolis kept Al Pacino’s Cuban accent from Scarface as a souvenir, which is odd as he’s supposed to be Mexican.

Slightly lighter? The reason I quit on BB was (IMO) it had become too bleak. I didn’t care about a single character, and it had lost the humor which had previously accompanied the mayhem. I repeat - just MO (and obviously a minority one at that!)

I hope they don’t sacrifice the potential storyline in this series just to reintroduce BB characters and tie up connections to please BB fans. If it can be done in a way to please me AND them - great. But - for example - Mike is an awesome character. I don’t want his storyline to be fucked up, just so they can be true to some extra who appeared in one ep in the 5th season of BB…

I assumed he had suffered a stroke, which affected his speech and placed him in a wheelchair… we shall see.

There’s no doubt Mike will have to take this deal. He’ll just have to warn Nacho that he’s got less Tuco-free time than he thought.

Though maybe he can bargain something better than 5k out of it. If Hector recognizes Mike’s badassery, maybe a full time job is in the future. BB spoiler:That doesn’t conflict with Mike eventually shifting over to Gus. (If Gus is introduced)

Really, it is fine and funny. Especially the options when they give you the “Press 1 for…” type menu.

Yes, NM gun laws come up in Breaking Bad too, where the gun dealer tries to figure out why Walt is bothering to buy from him and Walt basically doesn’t really answer, so the dealer talks to him about ‘offensive’ use. It’s pretty obvious to the dealer that Walt must be either clueless or planning to attack someone with the gun, since if he just wanted it for protection he could go fully legal without having to bother with a motel room trade.

Using meta logic, we know he has to take Hector’s deal (or something similar) because if Tuco goes away for eight years, he won’t be free for his role in Breaking Bad. Getting Saul to handle it makes a lot of sense and lets the two stories feed off of each other. I suspect he’ll work something out with Nacho, or at least tell him, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets Nacho into a bad spot later on. I could see him ending up with Gus to help keep Hector and/or Nacho’s crowd from hassling him too.

I also think this is probably the incident that makes him decide against half measures.

Wasn’t it the incident involving the wife beater? The one he described to Walt?

Hmmm. I watched it so it doesn’t really bother me, but have we decided Breaking Bad spoilers are totally fine? I think it’s a little uncool to those who are watching BCS but don’t want to know this guy can’t die or this other guy loses his leg by the time BB happens.

Half the posts would have to be in spoiler boxes if we take that too far. Does anyone not know, for example, that Mike is a character from BB and therefore we know he won’t die in BCS?

I did not, and do not plan to, watch Breaking Bad.
Spoilers are no problem for me.

Since the show was written assuming at least a large percentage of the audience would have seen Breaking Bad, it’s a little darling to expect people to not casually mention characters that are in both series (and therefore, gasp, bound to survive this series.) If someone is that fragile about spoilers I recommend they not read the thread at all.

Ok, whatever. Darling, gasp, fragile? Somewhat obnoxious, my friend. So sorry I upset you with my suggestion.

I’m guessing that was a typo, and tnetennba meant daring.

That’s the story he told Walt, and might be his background reason for not liking half measures, but to me the way he handled Tuco, while cool, seems like the kind of half measure he avoids in BB. Instead of quietly taking care of a problem for money, it’s got him involved in a drug family’s interpersonal disputes, and made him a target. And his pseudo-criminal activities also seem to be him trying to dip his toes into crime money without really embracing being a ‘bad’ criminal, a lot like Squat Cobbler guy.

IMO a lot of people ‘learn’ a lesson at one point in their life, then slip away from the lesson later on when it seems easier to do so, or that it won’t matter this one time, or whatever.

Not necessarily - you know when people get prison sentences for X years they don’t actually serve X years, right? If he got an 8 year sentence and served 5, that would be the exactly perfect timing needed for him to be getting out of prison right around the start of BB.

And it would certainly give him a lot of reason to be holding on to some pent up rage.
