Better Call Saul (Season 3)

Best episode so far this season in my humble opinion.

By comparison with last week, I think Odenkirk was much more restrained and authentic, and his little speech to Chuck while waiting to be picked up was devastating. Also, I enjoyed Mike’s subtle scheme to burn Hector’s ice cream truck crew.

Did anyone else get a distinct Guy Ritchie vibe from the montage of Kim getting ready for work?

Kim is awesome no matter what she does. I was impressed with Mike’s sharpshooting skills. Was he doing a favour for Gus or trying to send Gus or Hector a message?

He wasn’t doing Gus a favor so much that he and Gus both want to see Hector hurt.

Loved that cold open of the shoes, years later, falling to the ground after one of Gus’s trucks rolls through. Felt so very Breaking Bad.

So, Chuck does want him disbarred, however Kim and Jimmy are gonna fight him. This be nerve-wracking and fun, despite knowing he doesn’t get disbarred. I’m guessing Jimmy will do a 180° on Chuck, and instead of helping him with his condition, will find clever ways to exacerbate it. Maybe driving him insane before or during the trial. I can see Chuck showing up to court in a homemade foil suit.

I can also imagine Jimmy calling in a favor from Mike to somehow interfere with the trial, if only because it seems unlikely that they’ll just have completely separate storylines.

Which must be something that’s increasingly more difficult for the writers — finding ways to interlace their storylines without appearing forced.

Mike could also help with tampering with Chuck’s environment, as well. Really drive him batshit with electrical anomalies around his house.

It was nice to see the Mexican doctor again.

I’m pretty sure he’s the Dr. that fixed-up Mike in Season 4 of BB.

MtM

Chuck was remarkably calm and healthy when speaking to Jimmy at the curb. In the past when we see him outside, he’s covered in a mylar blanket, freaking out about electro magnetic rays and generally suffering. I think his “condition” is directly related to Jimmy’s success as a lawyer. When Jimmy’s license to practice law is in jeopardy, suddenly Chuck’s condition improves. I think Jimmy will realise this and capitalize on it to prevail over his brother.

Anyone else catch Victor AND Tyrus in the Mike/Gus scene? Think that’s the only time I recall seeing them together…

According to the IMDB pages, Actor JB Blanc who played the doctor in last night’s episode also played Dr. Barry Goodman in season 4 (“Crawl Space”) episode of Breaking Bad. Though he was only listed as Doctor in last night’s show.

How about that Gus line for dramatic irony:

It is not in my interest for Hector Salamanca to die at this time.

Actually, Gus, it is in your interest… :frowning:

**ding!*ding!*ding!*ding!*ding!ding!ding!!!

Piling on a little and agreeing a bit.

The experience of BCS is different for those who do not already know BB, but I do not believe it is less. Someone who did not see BB may or may not have suspected that something was up with the polite manager sweeping up and helping with the garbage can, maybe feeling proud of yourself when he appeared on the highway, maybe being surprised. Whichever one you got that experience while that potential pleasure of having correctly anticipated or of being surprised was unavailable to the BB aware viewer. We instead got the experience of being teased with his first view. Neither per se better, but different.

For that matter I have heard that the BB experience was very different for two sets of viewers - the ones who watched it as it viewed, waiting for new eps, and the ones who came in late and relatively binge watched most if not all of the show. It played differently to each. It works well in either experience of it but viewers report different senses of the characters and their development with the real time viewing pace, and likely respond differently to trying to anticipate what happens next.

That said I’m not sure that some of the surprises of BB aren’t diminished by seeing BCS first …

That shot of Kim and Jimmy in shadow in front of the glass brick wall - cinematography porn.

I think watching BCS without having seen BB is pretty much like watching a serialized show starting a few seasons in. Like, if you enjoy it, fine; but it’s not really written for that type of viewer.

Depending on how you look at it. Gus wants Hector to really suffer, to see his entire legacy torn down around him. A quick, unforeseen lights out from a distant sniper’s bullet would be unsatisfying.

Yet, less unsatisfying for Gus than their final scene together, you must admit.

Just like in the old days in the parkade.

Don’t know why Chuck, who “electricity sensitivity” notwithstanding is very intelligent is ready to risk going to trial. He will be cut to ribbons on XX by Jimmy.

Mr McGill, you claim to have a sensitivity to electricity don’t you?
You are wearing a a space blanket underneath your suit, since it “protects” you aren’t you
The doctor examined you and found you healthy?

He doesn’t think that it will go to trial.

Can someone explain all the stuff going on with Jimmie’s charges/trail? I get Chuck doesn’t want huge charges on Jimmie, but how is one felony going to hurt Jimmie? It’s not like he was stealing from a bank, or ripping off his clients. He busted in to his brother’s home, when he previously had a key, and almost got in to a fight. That’s bad and all, but would that really mean getting disbarred?

I also didn’t fully get the deal. I know there wasn’t supposed to be jail time, but the rest was over my head. Seems either taking the deal could get him disbarred, or going to trial could as well. But both Kim and Jimmie both thought taking the deal wasn’t the best idea.
